| 5 year old unaltered male Hi there. I've never posted before but read lots on here. I got my first yorkie Daisy in July. She is a bigger girl - now 13lbs and a handful - and still not fixed. I was contacted by the breeder because I fell in love with the Parti Yorkie's and she was retiring a male. I adored all his photos and decided to bring him home. He is 5lbs and has never been a successful sire. I am having him neutered in about 10 days. My question is this: will the marking in the house stop? He was allowed to pee in the house where he was before and he is very good here about going outside to do his piddles and is letting us know. The problem is the marking in the house on the furniture. What experience have you guys had with this? Thanks! Monique |

| When Kaji came home he was a year old and his breeder allowed him to mark indoors with a belly band on. Her furniture was safe, but Kaji was gettin use to marking inside. First thing I did was have him fixed. In the meantime, I would literally follow him around our condo when I would let him explore. Every time he squatted, or lifted his leg to mark, I would correct him. In my case I found a double clap, and a firm "No" (not yelling) was enough to get his attention. He also received lots of praise when he would pee/mark outside. I also limited his free roam time until I could trust him not to mark inside. This really worked for us. Kaji earned his free roam 2-3 months after coming home. 4 years later, we have had no issues. The only potty accidents now are my fault. I get so caught up doing chores, that I accidentally miss his "let me out" signal.

Lots of hands on training with positive reinforcement.

| My 10 year old male was used as a stud dog for the first 7 years of his life. He still marks...mostly outside, but sometimes inside. On a positive note...he used to be MUCH worse than he is now. You could always get him a belly band. It's not going to teach him not to mark, but it will keep your furniture from being ruined while you try to change his behavior. |

| Thanks everyone! I don't know what a belly band is. I guess I am to blame because he does get free reign along with the other 3. Other then once, I have not been able to catch him lifting his leg in the house. That one time I did get him to stop and he dropped his head instantly. He is very very quiet and can also jump out of his pen. We are working hard on the positive reinforcement when he goes out. He has moved to a much colder northern climate and I don't think he really did any business outside previously. And having as much snow as we do right now, we just put them out to piddle and then back in, so he does seem to get it & we are learning his "tell". Hopefully the neuter will help! |
