unfortunately too many people spend WAY too much thinking they are getting a 'Teacup'...I sure wouldn't want anyone to be obsessed with the cost of my girls - (they were NOT expensive).... but when I hear about people that paid too much and talk about it endlessly - then I usually tune out. To me..in my opinion...it's not saying much for their dogs personality if you have brag about how much you paid.

I think we can thank celebrities for making the world think that all Yorkies and many other toy breeds are supposed to super tiny. In part anyway. Of course they are cute, and look like a puppy their whole life. But I don't see how that breeding for super tiny can be healthy. I saw a Yorkie on Oprah last year that was around 1 pound, I think. It looked so fragile, and sickly.
Personally I love my 10 pound Lucy that I rescued last month. She is just about perfect. She is funny and snuggly and sturdy and well, just great. And she can jump around and play like a crazy girl and not break. She has really blossomed since we first got her.
I have a friend that breeds toy poodles and she does get great prices for her tiniest ones. She however breeds for health and personality first and foremost. And all of them under a certain size are never ever bred. Just way too dangerous for them.

Good for your friend not breeding tinies....and you only have 3 posts and you already made lots of friends with that last sentence !! Many of us really talk alot about breeding tinies and the dangers involved ....and also the small dog craze that seems to be due to the Celebs....

Too many people are jumping on the latest Fashion Accessory Fad ...but it's the small dogs who will suffer in the long run. I don't mean here... but in the real world... I just don't think alot of people realize how much special care a tiny dog requires.

Thanks, she is really turning out to be something special. I was afraid the she may never get over the hell I can only imagine she went through before we got her. But it seems she has forgotten most of it and is very comfortable with my husband and I and our cats and German Shepherds. I have never had a little dog so this is all new to me as well.
I have started doing a little training and she seems to enjoy it. I want her to be a smart well behaved little and well dressed little girl. She is learning to sit, and to dance for a treat and she does high five already. Not sure if this is just all my interpretations of her behaviors or she is really learning. But we have fun anyway.
I used to breed German Shepherds and I had most of them potty trained and started with basic obedience by the time they left at 8 to 10 weeks. She is more of a challenge. But we love her anyway, and she does seem to want to learn and will do most anything for a treat. I am afraid she will be a 20 pound Yorkie soon. LOL

It is so refreshing hearing from some of you with Yorkies that aren't so tiny after all!!!! They are still very small dogs and the world is certainly a much safer place for them than it is for the teeny tiny little ones.

I'm afraid that there are going to be more and more tiny little Yorkies because people are buying them and breeding them. People can try and justify this all they want ---but it is a shame that this is being done. A lot of little mother Yorkies and a lot of their little babies are paying the price for those that survive and are healthy.

I don't blame people too much for bringing home a little Yorkie that has already been born, but breeding to produce more tiny ones is something I cannot condone. And - many people are doing just this.

How often have I read - the mother weighs only 3 pounds and the father weighs only 4 pounds --- ??? I think this is criminal. But, I am sure a lot of people disagree with me.

Let's face it, ALL yorkies are adorable, if they are small, large, fat, thin, floppy ears, straight ears, blonde, black, brown, green or purple with pink pokka dots. I love them all, doesn't matter to me a bit on the weight, shouldn't to anybody else. Love them just the way God made them is what I say.

I have a smallish yorkie...and I'm not snobby I SWEAR.

I personally wanted a small one because we have a very small apartment. It would just be cruel to subject a dog any bigger than Syd to a place that small. Especially since she hates the cold and snow...so from November to April she doesn't really leave the apartment.

I certaintly agree that a dog's worth shouldn't be judged by size...but for my situation...I just needed a small one.

My Tia is very tiny but I never tell people her weight unless they ask me first. I'd rather brag about how she hops all around the house and chases her big brother Codie or how she LOVES yogurt drops or even how she destroyed her mommy's new silver sandals ... grrrr!

Codie is around 6-7 lbs and he is the PERFECT size in my opinion. He's all muscle and has very sexy legs Tia is cute too but her legs aren't as sexy as Codie's legs.

I love my little Coco bear. She's small but very sturdy. People always ask how much she weighs and I say "I'm really not sure." Usually because I'm really not. I don't weigh her and giving the weight from the last time you were at the vet, could be wrong because it might have been a while since the weigh in. So I just say I'm not sure, probably 3 lbs and a few ounces.

My girls are both about 3 -3.5 lbs and will likely reach close to 5 lbs (I think). I am really not sure how you can tell. Anyway...when someone stops us and asks about their weight, my 9 year old son has a great response. He always says the same thing. He will simply say...we dont know how much they weigh, but they act like they are 100 lb dogs and we like it that way
