If your dog won't wear shoes, you can try a product called "soft paws." They are a plastic sheath that fits over the nails. You apply them with nail glue that comes with the kit.
I've never used them on a dog, but I did use them on my cat as an alternative to declawing. At first, she'd pick them off, but after she got used to them, they'd stay on for 2 weeks or better and i'd just replace them one by one as they fell off.
They were super easy to apply on my cat, but I've heard they aren't as easy for dogs. On another forum, a few groomers were discussing how much of a pain in the butt it was to get them to fit properly. I also think they were referring to much bigger dogs though...like german shepards etc. Their clients were either a)using them to prevent scratching on their expensive wood floors or b.)because their dog had health problems(hip displasia etc etc) and they were having problems getting enough traction to stand up on slippery floors.
It definitely might be worth a try. Maybe you can find a groomer that applies them as a service...much like we'd go to a hair and nail salon to get our nails done. If you do them yourself, you will DEFINITELY want to make sure you don't glue any of the hair or skin into it! I was very careful with Miss Kitty but she doesn't have long hair like a yorkie
If I had a choice, I'd love for my boys to wear shoes but they just won't have it. They won't wear socks either. I bought these cute little smurf socks and you'd think I put 10 lb weights on their feet!!
