| Zoey is afraid of the new puppy? Brought the new puppy home today. I was going to introduce the adult dogs to him outside, but it's been pouring rain all day and is very cold out. Instead, I put the puppy in a crate and put the crate in the kitchen. My Rat Terrier, Juke started sniffing it, as did Zoey..however, Zoey backed away from it and kept her distance. After 5 minutes, I let the puppy out and Juke followed him everywhere. Poor Zoey ran upstairs. My Grandma thought maybe we could take them on a walk together. The second Zoey saw the puppy she darted back to the house. The puppy is now sleeping on a folded blanket, and Zoey is hiding upstairs. I decided to go in the bedroom to give Zoey attention, and to show her this puppy hasn't taken her place, but she wants nothing to do with me =(

| LOL. Happens this way sometimes. Poor Zoey, it's maybe gonna take some time. Congrats! See if she will take treats every time she is around the puppy or you pet and love her every time the puppy wakes up, moves close to her, etc. Associate it being active with treats/love for her. Maybe try that?

| This happened with us too. Dallas was scared of Rory and hid from her. Thankfully, he's gotten used to her and right now they're cuddled up by my legs, sleeping together. Give them time (it took about 3 weeks for Dallas to relax a bit... it took over a month for him to really accept her) and I think they'll end up very close. |

| I just went through this and even have my own thread on it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...kie-puppy.html however I am dealing with 2 Yorkies. Time is going to make it better but you need to make sure Zoey knows shes first in your eyes. No need to do outside introductions. Make sure everytime you come home, you say hello to Zoey first and then give your new guy attention. Also Yorkie pups are full of energy and tend to be intimidating to older dogs, so it is best to make sure you keep a close eye on your new pup and make sure he is not jumping all over Zoey. I still have a ways to go but it is amazing what positive changes have occurred over the last month. Also, dont force the situation, they have to come to accept one another on their own. Best of luck to you and your furry kids. Post a pic if you can. Last edited by JAYF; 10-11-2013 at 02:59 PM. |
