Yorkie vs Havanese and puppy vs adult To start off, I have 5 young daughters and a big dog. I have had my heart set on a Havanese female puppy, but I recently found an almost 2 year old, 8lb yorkie. The yorkie has been raised in a home where the woman runs a daycare for young children (and breeds yorkies). She has also been around the same breed of big dog I have. From what this lady says, the dog seems a perfect fit for my family. Also, the yorkie is a great price, and less expensive than the Havanese puppy. BUT, I do still have an attachment to that Havanese puppy. Anyone know both breeds and have input? Also, any input on getting an 8 week puppy vs a 2 year old dog?

| Well, for starters, an 8 week old pup is going to be like having an infant in the house LOL whereas a 2 year old will still be very young and chipper but already have a personality in place, and probably be easier There are pros and cons to both. I prefer puppies but that is only because my Jackson likes puppies and would adapt better to a dog that was young vs. another adult coming into his home. But I am also into training and dog sports and I kind of like to 'raise' a puppy, as hard as it is. Young adults are great because what you see is what you get. The personality and temperment is pretty much already there and it's fantastic that you already know she gets along with kids and other dogs. Puppies are kind of a crapshoot, you really just never know. As far as Yorkie vs. Havanese... Yorkies are terriers first and foremost. Some are the quintessential lap dog, but most will have lots of energy and have that 'terrier edge' to them. Havanese are probably a bit more laid back, in my experience, but most are known to be very lovable, good with kids and strangers, easy to train.

This would just be for a family pet. I am also worried, since I researched and decided upon a Havanese, that I will always want one still. I guess it probably depends on if the little yorkie can steal my heart. I think I will take my family to meet her (the yorkie named Mia) tomorrow. Just see if we fall in love with her or not and how she melds with our family. Anyone else have input?

I got Toki when she was 10 weeks old and I got Teddy when he was around 10 months old and they were two completely different experiences! I do look back at pictures of Toki's puppy stage and remember how cute, playful, and silly she was (she still is!). But there are just some things that I don't miss (like having to wake up a couple times throughout the night/wee hours of the morning to take her out for potty breaks, the teething stage, having to keep an eye on her etc). It was fine at the time because I was home a majority of the day and she was almost never alone for more than an hour or two. I think I would have been really stressed out with training her and making sure that she wasn't left by herself if I had a lot of things going on in my life at the time like I do now with working and nursing school. Teddy was already housebroken when we got him and although we spent time getting him transitioned and adjusted to our household, it was a relatively smooth process and not as intensive as bringing a young puppy home. If I were to get another dog for myself, I'd definitely lean toward an older puppy or adult. My parents took in a 5 year old yorkie and she was the best family pet! I can't offer any experiences with Yorkies vs Havanese but hopefully someone else can chime in

This would be a hard decision! Like you, I researched the breeds before making the choice, and for me it was between Yorkie and Havanese, also. The thing that decided it for me was--besides the circumstances surrounding our final decision--looking at pictures on the internet of the Havanese adult dog. Some were just plain ugly to me! (I know that sounds shallow and vain!) I have always thought that Yorkies were adorable, and I know that their look depends a lot on how you groom them, so I decided that was something in my control. Our Mia (funny, same name!) is still a puppy, at 18 weeks old. We LOVE her, and laugh at her funny puppy ways, but to be honest---I'm ready for the puppy stage to be over! It is truly like having a newborn in the house again. (And I'm not talking about getting up in the morning, because we use puppy pads.) There is a lot of work involved, plus, with a puppy you never know what you are getting. If I didn't have Mia, but had the experience of the puppy stage, I would definitely opt for the older dog if you have a connection with her. Meet her and see her temperament, and find out if she is a cuddly lap dog--if that is what you are looking for. Yorkies are energetic and feisty, but very smart and loving. I think they are very similar to Havanese, so I think your decision is going to be more about whether you want a puppy, or whether you want to see the "finished" and more settled product. Good luck on your decision! I think either way it is a win!
