| New to the forum Hello! We adopted a 4 year old, 6 lbs, beautiful little girl from a yorkie rescue on Saturday. She is a sweetheart, but I believe we were mislead as to her history. I thought what better place to find out how to give our little girl a great life by talking with you all. Our teacup yorkie, Angel, passed away this past February, and I'm not quite sure how to train an adult dog. Thanks!! |

| Nice to meet you Jeane! I hope to learn so much from all of you and this site is amazing!! I just read a post about puppy mill rescues. Very insightful! I'm not sure Annie was a puppy mill rescue, but she seems to have a lot of challenges for being 4 years old. |

| Thank you!!! OMGosh!!! Thank you all for your heartwarming welcome to the forum!! I was trying to review past threads to see if our concerns were addressed so that I didn't violate the rule of researching the site before asking questions! Needless to say, we are feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment, but after doing some research on the site, we are doing much better, so thanks to all of you for providing such great info!! As soon as I figure out how to post a picture, I will do so. Again, thank you soooo much for the warm welcome!! Last edited by Annie09; 08-28-2013 at 08:28 AM. |

| Hi and Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congratulations on your new girl, and I wish you all the best in training her. Lots of members here have rescue dogs, so I'm sure you can get help and advice from them with any issues. Bless you for rescuing Annie So, just ask away, and let us know how you and your girl are doing.

Most of the time rescues don't know the history of their dogs but any good rescue will be as honest as they can with what they do know. There are unfortunately dishonest rescues out there, but if you adopted your dog on Saturday your girl is still trying to adjust and won't be her normal self just yet. Train your dog just like you would a new puppy. Even if she was reported to be fully trained, treat her as if she has no training whatsoever. In my experience unless you are very experienced, it will take a month for a dog to fully adjust to their new home. Hope that helps! | |

| Annie's story (long post, sorry!) I am trying to upload her picture, so I hope it came through! We were told that Annie was surrendered because her original parents lost their home. She was with her foster family for 2 months before she was adopted. She was with that family for two weeks before she was returned because their dog could not get along with Annie. When we arrived at the foster home, there were several dogs of all sizes and everyone seemed to get along fine. I was a little disappointed to discover that foster Mom wasn't going to be able to meet with us because she was running late for another adoption. We talked briefly by phone and were instructed "to sign one contract, and take the other for our records." She repeated this several times. I asked to get a sample of Annie's food so that we could be consistent and she replied that she didn't have any food, she had to go buy some. I also didn't get any of her heart worm or flea medicine. Shouldn't I? With our previous yorkie, we gave her medicine every month. When we left, I was trying to give the foster mom's young daughter the fee for Annie, and she was too busy watching TV and said "just leave it on the counter." When we got Annie home, she was totally clueless as to what a wee wee pad was. I attributed this to everything being new. Even though the foster mom told us that she uses wee wee pads. To this day, she still is clueless. We were really hoping to continue this practice as we have hawks in our backyard and I don't want to take a chance with anything happening to Annie. After doing some research on the YT website, I now am training her like a puppy and things are working great! Though, I would like your all's advice on how I can train her to go inside. She seems to like to do her business first thing in the morning on the wee wee pads, but everything after that she wants to do outside. I asked if she had puppies, and was told no she did not. Well....this girls boobs are bigger than mine!! LOL!! Not that it matters, but just one more thing I don't believe we were told the truth about. I contacted the foster mom with our concerns about her house training, and her response was "if you don't have the time or patience for her, then return her and we will find someone else who will." I explained that I will not be returning Annie, and that I was only trying to seek some advice on how to help her....meaning what was her routine, etc. Was I expecting too much from the foster mom? |
