YorkieTalk Newbie! | Help needed for questions not found I have concerns which I did see in the FAQs. Our Yorkie is new to us and yet is 9 years old. He has medium length hair that is black on his back & sides and the rest is the rusty brown color. We, & the vet, noticed that his hair tends to have an oily feel and a bit of an odor - even though I bathe him weekly. We do not know why since we don't know the previous owner. He also has hair loss on his lower back, which I see is probably from an allergy. He bites at it, scratches it, & rolls on his back. I'm hoping the new oatmeal & aloe shampoo will help. I just made him a light coat too. We're wondering if this will be good enough, and, how long it may be before his hair grows back in. Lastly, his face seems narrower than the typical pictures we've seen. We've no way of knowing if he has another breed mixed in, yet are curious about it. Being seniors on SSI, we cannot afford many vet visits and are eager to learn all we can do on our own. Roscoe Liam is a great, well trained, mild mannered dog. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. |

That could very well be what is causing his hair issue. How is his diet? What do you feed him? Did you get Roscoe Liam (love the name!) from a rescue? Welcome to YT and please feel free to ask any questions you have. So happy to meet you

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks for responding! Hello MandiesMom! Yes we realize Roscoe must have allergies. We use a good dog shampoo with oatmeal and aloe weakly, and comb him daily. He just finished his antibiotics & Prednasone. We are also giving him a med with his water to help his teeth. We give him IAMs food, which he is eating better than the previous kind. He likes to sneak bits of the cat food, which is tiny pieces & a bit softer. He also wants any cheese he sees us eating! I made him a sweater & ordered a t-shirt for him, so he can't bite at his hair, etc. He adopted us! He showed up at our door early last month very disheveled and "ragged". We had flyers all around our area, but no one claimed him, so we nothing about his past. It has been love at first sight for us & him! Thank you for responding to my questions! We are thrilled to be a part of the Yorkie world! |

| Sometimes grains can cause problems they make my girl break out. Maybe you could try a grain free food. Like Acana, Now small breed, or Hills science diet ideal balance.

| Since you said you don't know the previous owner, you wouldn't know what they fed him. Yorkies seem to have sensitive stomach so as others have suggested, changing food might be the first thing to try. From what I remember, Iams isn't the best quality of food. If he likes the cat food b/c it's smaller and softer, I'd like to suggest soaking the kibbles in chicken broth (no sodium added) for a bit and then mush it up a little. If you google for homemade dog food recipies, you'll be able to find all sorts of recipies for food/snacks that might be cheaper/healthier. As for whether he's full yorkie or not... You can buy a dna test kit to send in and find out if you're really curious. I believe they cost from $65 and up. Also, even 100% yorkies might not look like your "standard" yorkie that you'd see on tv/pictures. There are plenty that's WAY over 6-7 lbs, less then 6 lbs, have floppy ears, etc... Thank you for rescuing him and giving him a loving home. Him "finding" you guys must be fate. I'd love to see his picture! |

| There are various opinions on what food is best...there really is no set answer to that. However, if the pup has unknown allergies as well as coat/hair issues, I would start with switching to a grain free food. As I said, there are different ones but I will suggest what I know. Mandie eats Blue Buffalo Wilderness. I get her the small breed but they have a toy breed variety that has even smaller pieces. If Roscoe Liam likes the smaller kibble, I would try that. You may never know what his allergies are if you are on a limited budget, but you can test things out. Try grain free food first...that is the most practical starting point. After a bit, if that isn't changing the allergic symptoms, talk to your vet about trying proper dosages of benadryl. Wipe paws with wipes when coming in from outside...may be a grass allergy. Keep treatment for fleas current to keep any flea allergy at bay. Hope this helps some....just tossing out ideas.
