Have a question about Yorkies and birds! We have had our pup since December, and we also have an African Grey parrot. Our parrot loves to talk to Hercules, and it gets the dog very excited. It's actually pretty numerous to watch. Our concern is, Hercules loves to eat the bird poo. We keep the bird cage in our main living area, and keep the door open because the bird loves to sit on top of his opened cage door. I change the paper under the door several times a day, but would use a ton of paper if I changed it every time he went poo. The dog loves to eat it (nasty, know). Would there be any health concerns we should be worried about from this? We do correct him every time we see him eating it, and we don't want to keep our Grey locked up since they are very social birds.

Hi! Macaw (& Yorkie) lover here. Yes, you should be concerned about your dog getting into your bird's droppings. They can carry parasites and diseases that they, themselves, might not react to. Also, your bird's diet may include foodstuffs not good for the pup. Suggest strong behavioral training. Does your cage have a perch on top? I've used a roller-based stand with a wide steel base to prevent droppings of food (both going in and out). lol.

Thank you! We hadn't thought about a raised tray. My husband is pretty handy....I bet he could build something that would work. He also likes to eat the zupreem pellets that the bird tosses. Could that be bad for him too? Most that he tosses land in the cage, but a few stray pieces will land on the floor.

| Maybe you use a low gate to block off the bottom of the cage so your pup cant get to the droppings? I use 14 inch tall metal grids attached together to "corral " my Christmas tree every year. Works like a charm!

We also have yorkies and African grey we have the problem of the parrot feeding ours his food mine love it, the parrot also loves to call them to throw water over them but the parrot also calls them and says come on then and starts a free for all dogs jumping up at cage barking, parrot trying to get them it's so noisy yet they all seem to enjoy it. Mind you the parrot also torments the cats calling them to top of his cage gives him a chance to get them. Had the parrot 17yrs cats 10yrs dogs 6yrs so it's been going on for years

There are different type of bird cages so maybe if you posted a picture of what it looks like, others can make more suggestions?

Thanks everyone! Our bird likes to throw his pellets down to Hercules, and he eats them. He also calls him, and it drives him nuts. I think we may put a small gate around the cage, but have a feeling that the bird will think its his new perch, and will sit on it. We crate the dog when the bird ventures out, or is low enough to reach the bird for fear that one of them will get hurt. Today is cage cleaning day, and if I remember, I'll take a picture and post it. Thanks for the advice everyone!

YT 2000 Club Member | dog We have a red-belly parrot, Rocky, 2 cockatiels , 2 singing canaries and about 11 zebra finches. The two Yorkies are not allowed in that bird room. I am sure if they got near feathers would be flying. I am glad you can let them all be in the same room together. Our home sounds like the Tiki room at Disneyland with all the birds. The Yorkies bark and oh boy it is quite the animal loving place to be! |

First time clipping Well I groomed my newest addition for the first time. I have never groomed Bella, but Jackson, was in need of it and and he has his vet appt scheduled for a week from today. He doesn't look to bad but not as good as my groomer. He sure is a squirmy six pound of nothing. Then it was bath time, which he's not fond of.

This is a little bit off topic but we just got a parakeet from a family off of Craigslist that did want her anymore. I was reading up on possibly rescuing another and I noticed that an exotic bird rescue in Oregon absolutely will not place any of their birds in a home with a "terrier type dog - no exceptions". My dog, Mouse has never shown and aggression toward Bernice (parakeet). I have never left them alone together but I have let Bernice climb all over Mouse and they have sat next to each other without any issues. He smells her and then ignores her. Bernice's buddy (before we adopted her) was actually eaten by a black lab.
