Okie dokie, your word is all we have! Truth be told those videos reflect the behavior of ANY dog with poor training....The difference is the growl, the defensiveness etc...in a Yorkie is a lot less ferocious than that of a large breed dog...IF they were poorly bred like this.

That is one of the most ill behaved Yorkies I have seen in a long time. But the owners are probably 95% at fault. There is absolutely no training, no correction of in-correct behaviour, astounding!

To the OP:

Find a breeder who breeds for good temperament, and knows how to raise puppies correctly. One of the keys to stable and good temperament is the temperament of the mother dog! Almost the most important. THe sire does contribute to temperament, but remember the mother is raising the pups for about 12wks or so.

Razzle every once in a while has growled/resource guarded me in particular. When that happens he is disciplined, firm no, off my lap or if he is getting some special bed time off the bed into the crate he goes.

Bones for many dogs are the ultimate high value treat. One needs to start from day one teaching leave it drop it give it. And there is a step by step process for this, which usually starts out with exchange, you drop that sock, you get a treat. You drop or leave that treat, I give you a better one.

Hello! I am new to Yorkietalk so wanted to say hello! I also have a question! How the heck do you stop your 5 month old female yorkie from eating her pee pads?? Those things are expensive! Unfortunately am unable to bring her out every hour due to work.

Think she would eat newspapers if you changed to those?

I'm just new here, too, and considering bringing a Yorkie into our family. Those first few videos posted just made me angry! What a terrible way to bait and tease a dog.

Thanks to everyone who posted to say that that was not typical Yorkie behavior.

Use washable pads.

My observation of the videos shows owners that haven't a clue about training their dogs. Dogs do not understand language unless taught. Behaviors have to be taught. These owners seem to be reenforcing bad behaviors.

The one with the boy reaching over to annoy the dog that was trying to check out the puppy seemed to show a real annoyance toward the boy. I would suspect that kid tormented the dog more than was shown in the video. The dog was not being aggressive to the pup but snapping at the boy. What is worse, everyone thought it was funny!

Yorkies are energetic little dogs and they are also very feisty due to their hunting instincts. I would suggest reading about the history and temperament of the breed before getting one. They are not like most calmer breeds. You have to take into consideration all aspects of a breed and decide with you can deal with. They do need boundaries from a young age.

Proper breeding and socialization are also very important with any breed of dog.

Yes, all of that is because he was never given boundaries. Wouldn't matter what breed he was.

If you want more examples of yorkie behavior and temperament, try these:

Very smart yorkie Uni know tons of tricks - YouTube

funniest Yorkie Tootsie Roll! - YouTube

or even...

Yorkie Kisses - YouTube

Baby kisses Yorkie - YouTube

*Note* I purposely included some well known Yorkies from Yorkie Talk
These vids are much better! Uni is mine (first vid), and I'll be the first to admit, she does not NOT ever growl, nip, bite, etc. She's a dog, and if taunted or annoyed enough, she will do those things. But we have trained her, and we have watched for signs of when she is getting annoyed, to stop whoever is causing the annoying behaviour before it gets to that point. HOWEVER, she does also have a play/happy growl, bark, AND nip, believe it or not. You can tell the difference in the body language. Ears up instead of down, tail up and waggin instead of between the legs, etc. But she does show teeth. We do have some tricks where we tease her and she "bites", for example if we stick out butt in her face and pretend to fart, she gets "mad" and will growl and bite at our pants. But when she actually bites it's barely a touch.

Now we have given her very high value treats before, such as bully sticks/wishbones, etc. She guards those and gives nasty growls if you get near her. If you try to take it away, she tries to bite to cause damage, and HAS. We solved the problem by never giving her bullys anymore. I could imagine if we gave Uni a porterhouse steak bone she would act the same way. BTW, who in their right mind would give their dog a highly fatty, cooked and seasoned bone??? Oh right, a bad owner who doesn't know how to train their dogs, and thinks teasing them is funny.

I feel so sorry for that dog. He must be living a miserable life.

The dog in the videos you posted is probably the worst behaved yorkie I have ever seen. Of course you can find videos of almost every breed on youtube with poorly behaved dogs. I hope you spend some more time researching and realize that there are lost of videos of good dogs out there My dogs are in the third video posted by MandiesMom and you can find several other videos of them on YouTube. Yes they have their quirks, but they are great dogs!

What amazes me is that many people accept poor behaviour from small dogs, they would never condone in a large dog.

Imagine a 70 lb dog showing that display of teeth, snapping, growling etc.

Sheer foolishness.

LOL!

To the OP, teaching bite inhibition to any dog is crucial. That means the dog learns how to control use of their teeth. Max gives me playful bites on the nose that are very gentle. His signature greeting for me and my father is kiss, kiss, nose nibble.

Both of my dogs will gently and slowly place their teeth on my hand when I accidentally bonk them while playing. They did that more when they were younger.

We had a recent incident meeting a person on the street who wanted to pet my dogs. The man was football player size and I think he was intoxicated. He smacked Max on the top of the head and Max snapped at his hand. Max has never snapped at anyone in his 4.5 years. Although I think Max was sort of justified, he knew it was wrong and immediately went into a sit position.

Body language -- a wagging tail is not always a happy tail. It can be a battle flag too. But as Capt Noonie wrote, you learn to read body language, the little nuances of the ears, tail, torso, legs.

lol If I try to take something from Lilly she isn't done with yet, she will growl at you like she might kill you but I am able to take it away usually...except the ring from the bologna the other day. She swallowed it whole in one snap so I had no chance. But I don't think it's bad manners. If mine really wants something bad and you're trying to take it, she lets you know it's not okay with her, but I still take it.

Definitely need to make sure you are telling her no when she is growling it is not a good behavior to have.
