Help needed, is this labor???? Hi, I have posted this in the breeders section but no joy with replies so thought I would try here.... Hi everyone, I am hoping for some advice. My Tinkerbell is pregnant with 2 pups and yesterday she was a bit mopey and very clingy, I couldn't leave the room without her following! Then I took her temperature at it was 98.20. A short while after that she was sick! I stayed up with her all night and feel so sleep deprived right now!! her rear started to swell which makes her walk a bit funny bless her and one of the things I noticed in the early hours this morning was how active the pups were, it's like they were playing tag obviously with not much space to run so it was a bit mad! Is all of this normal.??? Is she in labor? No waters have broken but it's just the swelling on her rear that made me think 'This is it'!!! Please help and let me know what you think cos So tired right now but she's sleeping .... X

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hi, well I can only give advice on what Molly was like so... Yes her pups were really active in the last couple of days so would say its normal, you will know when her waters go, then its a waiting game to see how long it takes for the contractions start, Molly showed signs at this point of lifting her bum and you could see her belly tighten, Molly missed out the nesting part also, so had very few signs to go off Hope this helps Good luck

Do you have a due date calculated? When she is in labor you will be able to feel her uterus contract. Put your hand on her belly. You should be able to feel it getting hard during a contraction. It will then get soft again in between contractions. When she is in hard labor the uterus will be hard a good deal of the time and she will start to push when a puppy is in the birth canal. If she doesn't produce anything after several hours of labor call your vet. Sometimes a small litter will produce larger pups that may not come out as they should. I'm not sure what you mean by swelling in the rear. That doesn't sound right to me. When in doubt call your vet. Have you read up on whelping pups I hope? Make sure you know what to watch for. I hope all goes well for mom and babies.

The swelling is like in this pic but not as advanced if that makes sense.... Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. We went to the vet on Tuesday and she said less than a week, obviously that's 5 days today. All she wants to do today is sleep. She's not in any pain or panting or anything so that's why I'm unsure. Yes, I have read so much on whelping in the last few weeks, I want to be prepared with what to look for and understanding it all. Last edited by MamaBirdie; 06-23-2013 at 08:21 AM.

Welcome to the world of breeding!!! Lack of sleep??? I just tube feed three babies, every hour, around the clock, for 2 weeks, advancing to every 2-3 hours, around the clock, and finally able to bottle feed every 4-5 hours, while working a full time job in hospital Administration and managing my breeding business!!! SLEEP????? Have not slept in a month, beyond 15 minute cat naps! OMG!! I LOVE IT!!! The babies all survived and are healthy and strong and nursing on their own now! Good luck with your litter, sounds like your girl is about to present you with your vision of what your program defines as a beautiful, breed standard prototype Yorkie! What day is she? Do you have her confined to her whelping box or an ex-pen? Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 06-23-2013 at 10:14 AM.

The picture you linked to is a female that is in active labor with a pup in the birth canal. If your girl is not in active labor and not pushing she should not have that kind of issue right now. If she is calm and not contracting it is doubtful that she is in labor. I guess I would be concerned about the swelling if that is the case. She is near the end of her pregnancy so don't take your eyes off her. If she still has that swelling and is not in labor I would have her checked out again.
