But he stressed to me "they ARE purebred Yorkies, out of purebred Yorkies, with a color deviation".

The pie-bald gene did not originate in Mr. Biewer's yorkies. See the recent thread on Partis v. Biewer.

The piebald gene in the Biewer most definitely did not arise as a mutation in the Yorkshire Terrier, it was bred in from somewhere else. It wasn't necessarily Mr. Biewer who did the mixed breeding--supposedly he bought the piebald carriers from a breeder in England, the same kennel from which Parti Yorkies are reported to originate (Streamglen, or something like that) as well. The shenanigans could have taken place at the English kennel, or even earlier. We may never know when it happened, but it DID happen.

In good faith, he may have believed this to be true, so I can't fault him for saying that, but science shows that the color deviation must have come in from some other piebald dog breed in the past.
