| Summer hair cuts for your pup? Riley is heading to the groomer tomorrow for a oatmeal bath and a trim. Question is, does he need shaved? I read yorkies are double coat dogs and they should not be shaved bc they may never grow their hair back again. So seasoned yorkie mommy and daddy's, shave or just trim up? He is 5 but I have no idea if his previous owners ever shaved him before so I don't know if he'll have trouble or not. |

| Well, Yorkies are DEFINITELY NOT double coated dogs... just look and you can see that so I'm not sure where you heard that from, lol. In fact, they typically have thinner hair so they need extra "protection" in the cold seasons. For me, I keep their hair really short. Zeus' hair is about 1-2 inchs. Thalia is about 3. They go for daily walks so it gets hot out. I don't keep them in long coats though.

| I have been told by several people and have read in several different info site about yorkies that have also said they are double coated. So I'm not really sure whose right but I have read that they are more so than I have that they aren't. He's a little shorter haired but its long enough it gets Matted easily sometimes. Last time they just trimmed his legs and around his face but I'm trying to decide if his body also needs to be cut. |

YT 500 Club Member | I have kept my male fairly short on his body. He looks more sporty and as he really hates the brush it's better all the way around. I've never heard of the double coat, just that they have hair like we do instead of fur or an undercoat. I like to have his fave trimmed Kind of like a westie (full).

| Hearding and Arctic dogs have double coats (where you need to pull the hair off once they shed it). Yorkies just have the single coat. As for cutting it, you can definitely cut it down and it will grow back - just like our own head hair so you'll be fine.

| Seems every site I click on tells me the opposite of what the site before that said about their hair. I'm guessing though if several of you shave your yorkies and their hair grows back then I'm going to go ahead and assume Riley's will grow back too. He's outside a lot, loves laying in the sun and his coat gets very hot to the touch if he's out for too long. So we will probat get him shaved |

| My boy is 9 months and I have trimmed him short twice. First because puppy coat matted now because it gets very hot here and he has a thick black maltese coat. His hair grew fast between cuts. It was almost three inches when I trimmed it his time. |

| I haven't had my pup cut yet, but in a couple weeks I plan on it. His hair is getting way too long. I know when I get his hair cut, I want the puppy cut. That's the cut I want him to always have. Look it up on Bing and you'll see how cute it is on adult dogs. Not too short, not too long. |

| Sasha's in a puppy cut right now. I'm allowing her hair to grow back tho. Yorkies don't have a double coat and their hair will grow back if shaved, trimmed, etc.

| Yorkies are single coated but sometimes yorkie puppies have different quality puppy fur. As you know, the fur changes as the puppy grows. The color and quality of the fur changes. Lucy had a thicker puppy coat. Now, she has beautiful and fine straight hair. She's never had a "puppy cut." I bath her every week or week and a half though. Lucy is also going to the groomer tomorrow! I'm going to ask the groomer to give her a "bob" and lift her skirt up a bit. Her hair grows fast and this year with all the pollen and stuff falling to the ground, her new name is "the Swiffer." She picks up EVERYTHING in her fur. And the stuff is worse than matts to get out. Her fur has always continued to grow out. So I think if you decide to get a puppy cut and your puppy is purebred, it should grow back. Good luck. Tracey |

| Mina's is kept at #4 (1/2") on her body and her face is long. This is year round. Yorkies do not have an under coat (thicker fluff that is brushed out at the end of the winter). For this reason, many put sweaters and coats on them in the winter time,,,they get cold. |

| I just had Kiki groomed. My groomer called it a skate board short on her back and neck but face is long and longer on the bottom kinda like a skirt.

| I just cut Tibbe back severely for the hot weather and he looks so cute all short and puppyish. He's acting like he's a puppy - so frisky and energetic with his new coat. He definitely has no double coat.
