Donating YT 500 Club Member | Expressing Anal Glands I am curious if this is necessary with every grooming? Jasper will have his 1st grooming on the 14th and I was told this would be included. I told her I did not want that done. Am I doing the right thing? He doesn't scoots or pay attention to his rear at all and he poops 2-3 times a day. I want to make sure I am making the right decision. Oh and he will be 5 months old Tuesday. Thanks everyone.

I have found that SOME groomers do them wrong and that can cause problems. So I say tell them do not touch the glands. IF by some chance Jasper ever has problem take him to the Vet.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Thank you. Actually, this groomer is at our vets hospital. They told me that they marked the file. But we will meet the groomer when we drop him off and I will stress to her that I do not want this done. You made me feel better. Thank you again!

| When Bella went to the groomer's, they did not express her anal glands. If you check on youtube, you can find videos of how to do it yourself--definitely not something to watch if you're squeamish! If Bella ever has problems, I'll learn to do it myself because it's not difficult, but my policy is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

| My opinion if there is not a problem, leave them alone. I had a groomer that did my male and he smelled so bad that evening. It was awful! He never goes in the house but that night he did a pile and it was full of blood. I just can't see messing with them if there is not a problem. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | A good groomer will hesitate in doing this even upon request. I was once told by my vet (for Sabu) and now the groomer (for Julie). I don't know quite how to to explain it, I'll try. If their anal glands are expressed unnecessarily, then they'll need to be expressed more often. I was told you can tell when the anal glands are ready to be expressed when you see them scooting on the floor. Starlette

| Small dogs normally are unable to express the anal glands there self. My groomer is at the vets office so I know she knows how to do it.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I agree with you that anal expressing should be done by the vet only. When I took Sabu to get his bi-annual grooming, anal expressing was expected to be part of the "grooming" (widely known pet store). So Lovetodream88, I do stand corrected in that respect. However, when I took Julie for her first grooming that groomer hesitated to express her anal glands. I just remembered about Sabu. I still think a good groomer would hesitate to do an anal expression. Going forward, I'll just say, "I'll have my vet take care of it, thank you." Thank you. Starlette

| You know what doesnt make sense now that I think of it.. My Moms cat never had hers done, she is 9 Well she had one of hers rupture, had to have surgery. She never had any problems, never any signs she needed them. It makes me think you should get them done.. ?? Just a thought.
