Breaking "Sootie"???

Here's Joey around 5 or 6 months, there's a little black, but the roots are silver, I guess they call that sooty.

This is Joey at 15 months, his head is very silver, but it will turn light beige soon.

This is Joey at 2 years or more, his head is golden beige, with his mustache area being a little darker.

This is 5 plus years his color has stablized, and his head is beige and gold.

ZoE's breeder KNEW she would be silky, she was adamant about that, and it turns out she is. She just doesn't tangle. She will matt a little under her armpits if she wears a harness or some types of clothing all day and she walks alot. She also has a deeper gold rather than a lighter gold.

But I think there's more to having a great coat, IMO, because I wouldn't label ZoE's coat great. It is extremely slow growing, and seems somewhat fragile because it breaks off pretty easily. She eats good food and I use the best products on her, but I just think it's what she got dealt genetically. My last yorkie's coat took more time & management than ZoE's, but I her hair grew quickly and was much less prone to breakage.

It looks like my Bella has Joey's color pattern--light silver on the head and tan around the eyes and muzzle--as Joey. Can't wait to see how she develops!

My Eva Noel's coat is like that too. She has a silky coat, has a deeper gold and her coat seems more fragile than Bella or Doc's. I trimmed her hair a month ago, but now am letting it grow out. I'll post a photo.

Eva Noel is 7 1/2 months now, but she started breaking color around 4 months. it went from a light gray, to a sooty color, to platinum and back to sooty and now to a golden blond. She will NOT look at the camera so this is the best I can do, but you can still see the "sooty" color on the end of her top knot and the gold that she is growing now.

Eva has a silky coat, it is straight and doesn't tangle, but it seems more fragile than Bella's or Doc's coat. I gave her a cut/trim about a month ago, but am letting it grow out now.

btw ... she has weighed eactly 4lbs since she was 5 months old, and hasn't grown another inch, but she doesn't look like she even weighs that much, she's solid muscle.

In this pic, at 1.5... He has his tan coloring, but he has continued to lighten up even more since then. I swear, at 4.5 years old that he is still changing... It's crazy!

I love Couver! Max had the same stripes and an exhibitor here told me that they are called "thumbprints." I think Max had his until age 3. Like Couver, I think he is still changing.

She is a very pretty girl and I love her rich coloring. Max went through so many color changes, I don't remember them all. He had the stripes. His topknot turned silver and then gold.

I agree, Joey is a gorgeous boy.

My Teddy was white blond on his head at 8 months with a lot of blond underneath. He will be 4 this year and has turned gold on top with a silver/blue saddle.

Oh thank you, his face has always been light, but the saddle has been dark blue. Males tend to keep their darker blue coloring while a female will often get lighter with each heat. Also, pregnancy lightens some coats, but Joey's mom kept her dark blue all her life and I hear that's unusual for females. I think the light blue can be gorgeous too, but I guess the dark blue is the preferred coat.

Here's Isabella Bleu ... I don't know which coat category she would fall into. She has a lot of coat, and I use a good conditioner to keep her from getting knotty, but I don't think she is a pure cottony coat, but rather a more modified coat. Underneath all that coat, Bella only weighs 3lbs 8-10oz at 7 months old.

Does she look sooty?

Oh my she's adorable, yes, I think that may be what people call sooty too. It seems like the ones I've seen like this have the darker gold color in their heads rather than the light beige as they grow older. My Ralphie has a mixed coat, it looks beautiful because it's so thick, but it tangles so easily, pluses and minus of everything. I agree, it fun watching them change colors, and no matter how old they get most people still think they are a puppy!
