But my bank says that is no longer the case. They said even a certified check needs to be deposited & you need to wait days for it to clear, before you know it's actually good. There are too many fakes out there that are now printed so well, there are basically indistinguishable from authentic checks.

| Are you buying from a reputable breeder? Because you should be getting more than just a receipt for payments made. You should be getting a signed contract. You should be getting a signed health guarantee, that you've already read-over and know offers you some protection as a buyer? (sometimes the health guarantee is a part of the contract & not separate) You should also be getting your AKC papers when you pick up your puppy.

| that's a good alternative. I just REALLY felt safer getting a certified (or cashiers?) check. But again, I want to be fair to my breeder. I mean I KNOW i'm not going to scam her out of money but she doesn't necessarily know that seeing as she's been burned before in the past and quite frankly if I were a breeder i'd be concerned as well. I think I will just pay her cash and make sure I get the receipt signed and dated. |

| Donating YT 500 Club Member | I mailed a personal check to my breeder for the deposit. A few days before we were going to pick up Jasper, I called and asked what form of payment she wanted for the balance due. She told me that I could pay her with another personal check if I wanted to. So, that is what we did. When we picked him up (which was also the first time we had seen him) I wrote her out a check and she also wrote me a receipt. I guess different breeders have different preferences. However, after reading this thread, I can see where it is really risky to not let the pup go home until the personal check has had time to clear the bank. I knew the check as good, but she didn't. I must have an honest face.
