How to pay the breeder? I was wondering the safest way to pay my breeder my remaining balance? I read in a thread a while ago to never ever pay in cash. |
You could do a cashier's check so the breeder knows the money is good. I do everything via card or cash (never checks - I have checkless checking). I wouldn't mind paying in cash as long as I got a good receipt...maybe get it signed by the breeder. I'm sure others will be more helpful.. :) |
I paid cash, but she also gave me a receipt showing how much was paid in that it was in cash, on her kennel letterhead. Most people won't accept a check and I don't blame them. Guess your only other option would be a cashier's check or money order. I would suggest to check with the breeder on their preferred payment method. If you want to pay cash I would ask them to have a receipt prepared as proof of payment. JMHO. :D |

Thank you all for your responses! I paid my downpayment with a certified check (is that the same thing as a cashiers check? I might be saying the wrong name. oops!) and she mailed me back a receipt with an adorable blanket she had made for Miley. My breeder asked for cash for the remaining balance in cash because she had "been burned too many times before". After seeing posts about never paying in cash, I'll be honest....it made me question for her a second (just me being paranoid) but she is okay with me paying the same way I paid my downpayment. |

I will accept a personal check for the entire balance due IF the payment is mad at least 10 days before the baby is picked up....that gives me the cance to get the check cleared before the baby leaves.....most of my people just bring cash for the balance due when they pickup the baby....there is a place at the bottom of my contract where all money paid, cash, check or whatever, is recorded....IRS had suggested that would be a good way to "accurately record income from the sale of the dog, and keep my owners from thinking I was getting cash for the final payment and only recording money received by check." I dont think that is something my owners worried about so much, as the IRS!!!!!!! But whatever.....I dont "misappropriate funds" for any reason....I have NO intention of getting into a pissing contest with the IRS!!!!! Especially since they are soon going to have 3/4 of my life under their scrutney!!!! |
Cash should be just fine but make sure you get a contract that you both sign that shows the guarantee and how much you paid for the puppy. Did you ask the breeder about her guarantee? |
If I were a breeder there's no way I would take a check for final payment that's just asking for it. We paid with cash but I think a money order would be fine also |

My daughter put the deposit down (as ZoE was over on the side of the state where she was at university), and I paid the balance in cash. I used to think a certified check/cashier's check was the same as cash...turns out it's not true. I bought a new car & sold my old car two months ago, and was informed by my bank that they are only as good as cash if they are drawn on the bank you're depositing in, otherwise they take a few days to clear just like a regular check. So a few days before a title could be cleared of a lien if you have a lien on the vehicle. They said this is because of the new fangled printers/scanners and how easy it has become to make a really good fake. Thankfully my car was owned free & clear, and both my sale & purchase were cash, but it was new information to me. |
