Yes, it is normal. As I had posted previously, we had a puppy in YHR who had problems with hypoglycemia. He was older than Joey when he came to us..I
believe he was 14 weeks at the time but he only weighed 15 ounces. He was fed every two hours around the clock until he was larger and able to maintain on his own.

I am thrilled to hear this news about Joey!!

The hospital did but since I never got any results I assumed he was fine. They basically talked to me about his elevated white blood cells etc.

I hate to ask more questions, but what is the health status of Joey and will you have more info from any exams/tests performed by the breeder's vet?
I was concerned that some blood tests showed high white cell count. Could that be due to some underlying infection?
When all data are in, how is Joey to be treated and managed?
I am sure all here would wish to know how he is doing and what ails him.
I know you are very busy and stressed right now, but please update us when you are ready. Excuse the intrusion at this difficult time.

White count can be elevated for many different reasons, including stress. They also could be elevated due to a parasite...so if he did have one, it could be from that. Infection is often the cause, but not the only cause. I would think they probably did a differential and either decided it was due to stress or the parasite they said he had.

I think time will tell on this one....the fact he is responding to frequent feedings is a very good sign.

Did the breeder take him to the vet? I missed this part on the update.

Oh duh...I did read it. Her vet is thinking Joey will be fine. I do hope this is the case. Do they have the blood work that was done at the EC .. it would be good for comparison. I am assuming her vet did blood work?

First let me say that I like everyone else on here wishes you and your puppy Joey the best. Sometime lessons must be learnt the hard way. Sometimes when a breeder of toy dogs goes against their better judgement, when wanting to either please a person that is buying a wee one from them, and they know a person that is waiting to bring home their new puppy, a breeder can make the terrible mistake of selling a tiny puppy to early. Eight weeks is just not old enough. In many cases, if they are very tiny twelve weeks is not even old enough to sell a puppy that is very small. More like sixteen weeks should be the norm to sell a tiny one.

I'm wondering if your breeder sent you home with information about Hypoglycemia???? No toy breeder should be under educated on this subject. Beside making sure his kibble was left down at all times, his drinking water should have been kept sweeten with either sugar, or Carole syrup. Doing these few simple things could have made a world of difference with your little Joey. They are many articles that you can read about Hypoglycemia either on line or at you local book store, or the library. If you only knew that a simple squirt of pancake syrup down his throat would have brought him right out of that Hypo attack, it could have saved you the agony you are going through now. I am very well aware if hypoglycemia and how it is treated. Joeys kibble was left out at all times and he was given a little bit if nutrical every 3 hours just in case. If you go back and read you'll see that Joey is unable to regulate his glucose when being fed normally unless he is given glucose through an IV. I may have never had a dog before but I read up a lot before I got Joey. This wasn't as simple as a hypoglycemic attack. Joey either has some type of congenital defect or a liver shunt according to my vet.

The breeder didnt give him to me early because I pleaded with her to. She honestly felt he was ready to go home and since he was over 8 weeks ( the law in my state) I assumed he was ready. Joey was given so much glucose between me and my vet we joked he might get diabetes. Unfortunately giving Joey a gallon of nutrical a day wouldn't have made a world of difference. Something is wrong with him. It's not as simple as hypoglycemia.

I'm praying that Joey continues to improve and that you young lady get some rest! What a traumatic week you have had, I can relate as one day after getting Mini I was told she needed to be euthanized, thank God the vets were wrong and that my husband had the where with all to say "I'm taking my poopie little girl home"!!!

Try to focus on the positive right now, the improvement. You've done a great job taking care of this little guy, I think we all know this, and I know you will continue to keep his best interests first.

Many of us know how heart wrenching this is for you right now, just know you are not alone and that no matter what you are doing everything you can.

this is such a sad thread. I hope your little Joey makes it. The more of these threads I read the more amazed I am at how heartless breeders can be. Hoping for the best for Joey.

Hopefully they find what is causing his illness, You need to rest so when come;s home he will have a strong Mommy.
