Small Dogs Outside Alone Another tragedy I've heard about nearby my home. I feel like the overprotective Mom of the neighborhood, but I am outraged about what happened to this dog that found a small spot in the fence "that wasn't there yesterday" and poor thing ran in front of car doing 30mph. on the street, the yelping and screaming from a block away sent me in my bare feet running, I've just finished washing the freaking blood off my hands so here I go: Dear People, Backyards are not safe for little dogs, doggie doors are not safe for little dogs to go in and out of either, I'm sorry they just aren't...disagree all you want but I warn you they are not safe. Backyards are natural habitats and change daily, the fence you have up protecting your yard may be sound, but rabbits, raccoons, fox, squirrels live there too, they dig, they can and do dig holes that your small dog may just find and get out of....and die because of. The other wildlife that can and do get in to your yards can and do harm small dogs every single freaking day and sometimes lead to death. Passersby, birds etc., may drop something harmful in your yard and your little dog may and often do, find it and sometimes die from whatever was dropped. Birds, hawks, crows, eagles etc., may fly over your yard and snatch one of your pups, they do it everyday and it sometimes leads to death. This happens daily too. Trees, bushes fences poles etc., sometimes change and a sharp object is no place for your small dog to be around and they often are injured because of things like this and sometimes die. This happens daily too. People, often times people steal, even in the country even if you live in the middle of nowhere, they steal your dog and sometimes you never see them again. Sometimes, utility people, strangers, Jehovah Witness' etc, open your gate and your pup gets out...sometimes they die. This happens daily too. I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would/do leave there small dogs outside alone, unattended to let tragedy strike, it often does and it happens daily. Yes I know tragedy can strike in front of your face as well, but really why do so many gamble with their little dogs, it happens daily and it sometimes leads to death. |
Yes I did yell at my neighbor, yes I am angry, yes I think people are stupid and no I'm not perfect either, but this poor weiner dog died because someone was too lazy to take him/her out. I had to help the poor dog because the owner was too busy yelling HELP ME, HELP ME, no you twit help your defenseless dog. |
Well said lynzy! Nobody will convince me it's safe for even a teapot to be outside alone. It just isn't :thumbdown So so Sad about the dog...... So pointless!!! |

arrrrggghhhhh, I'm having a Hot Toddy maybe I will stop shaking.... I'm absolutely heartbroken for that poor little guy, he was screaming a scream I never want to hear again, I had to climb under a car to get to him, omg, I am scarred for life, and now have a new cause, I'm sick of hearing and now seeing the stupid things people do cuz they are lazy pos'. Okay I better shut up. |
My babies don't go out alone. We have fisher cats being spotted and they can easily kill a yorkie. |

My mom used to let our Irish Setter outside alone...... Even SHE got into trouble when her collar got stuck on the fence and she choked to death!!! |
Very well said lynzy and every single example you have listed, is factual and they DO OCCUR!!! People, if you let your precious baby go outside, even for ONE MINUTE, unattended, and something happens, you must accept responsibility for the results, regardless of what it is. PLEASE, DO NOT DO THAT TO YOUR BABIES!!! They depend on YOU to have more sense than they do, so you MUST run interferance between them and all the dangers and evils and unfortunate or unplanned obsticles that lurk around and lure our babies frequently, to their deaths. Sometimes, we talk and preach and beg and hassle and irritate as we try to make people see the dangers in doing some things they do with their babies, and we STILL see every one of the bullets you listed above, happening, and stunned and confused and heartbroken owners, stand in shock and awe, not understanding what in the world could have possibly happened to THEIR baby....."but, I only stepped away for a minute or two....." That is all it takes..........DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BABY UNATTENDED!!!! |
Lynzy I agree with you totally it is so sad how some people expect these little ones to fend for themselves:( I treat mine like babies and yes I am a over protective mom and PROUD of it!!! |
Well said Lynzy! |
Some people should not have a dog, whats the point of having them and then letting them roam around your garden unattended,! You are so right to vent about this. |
I agree, Im glad I do not have a back yard, and the front Im right there hovering over him |
I'm so, so sorry you had to go through this and that the poor pup died that way. P-Nut's a teapot, but 11lbs is still very small. There is no WAY we'd let him out alone, ever. He still tries to eat things, he's a danger to himself. And good for law enforcement - backing you up and giving you a ride home  |
How terrible:( There's a lot of small dogs around my house that are always out by themselves. I think I'm the only one around here that stays out with their dog. I even see certain little dogs roam regularly and the owners just act like it's normal......yeah it's sad though. But then again i've had toddlers roaming my yard before! |
Ya know....some human beings....just don't earn the word human. I don't get it. These little fur creatures are so dang precious, I can never understand it when people are so careless with them. And I don't mean truly naive people who will learn, I mean those who just don't care to learn ....or they've learned, but still just don't give a _____. |
You were a hero to that doxie today! This makes cry. My sweet doxie died at 10 years old from heart disease. He was never out alone. Our shepherd is never out alone! Will the baby make it? Do you know??? |
Some humans don't deserve the privilege of having animals!!! |

Thanks for saying (writing) what many people feel. In 20+ years of being a dog owner, I've never let any of mine outside alone! Too many things can happen! So Sorry you had to have this happen to you. :( |

I'm sorry Lynza...are you going to be alright? |
You are SO RIGHT! There is a house we walk by sometimes on longer walks and my guys love to say hello to this little guy who is often running around in the yard, but George (also a Yorkie) climbs over his ~3' chain link fence to get out because he gets so excited when we walk by. This is cute and George is obviously a very talented escape artist, but it scares me that he is going to get killed some day by his owners who just don't seem to realize the risk. Even jumping down from that height is dangerous and I would NEVER let my guys out alone. NEVER! I will barely ever let them off the leash because I am worried that they will take off after a squirrel or robin, but leaving them without even watching is way over the top. Check this article our I just read... I am sure this guy thought his Yorkie was safe in a small pack, but he also almost learned a terrible lesson. And I'm sure we have all read or seen plenty of things like this... Not just man¿s best friend! Brave labrador battled to save wounded Yorkie from the claws of a hawk | Mail Online |
OMG, Lynzy, I am so sorry you had to experience that. How horrible...how sad. To top it off, the lady turned her anger at you...pathetic. I have had large dogs who hated being indoors in the daytime who I would allow to stay in a fenced yard when it was nice out, and one of them got her leather collar tangled in a small plant, freaked out and thrashed around so much she got it so tight she was choking. Last time they wore collars when I wasn't right there with them, too. Some things you think are safe...aren't. But, when it comes to a small dog, I never leave them alone. Too many dangers, especially since someone let one of my large dogs out of the fence yard and she crossed a busy highway before I found her. {{{Hugs}}} and nice choice on the Hot Toddy! ;) |
That's terrible. There are some cases where a doggy door and them being outside is safe. We have a brand new not even year old fence with nothing but grass in the fenced in area no plants no tress nothing. We don't have coyotes and Callie is much to big to be picked up by a bird of pray. The fenced in yard is also in the middle of three acres with no trees around. There are 8 windows and two doors (one door is all glass French doors) that look out to the fenced in area where she is not at for very long periods of time unless she is laying out in the sun. The fence is checked at least once a week for problems sometimes more. The fence can not be seen from the street and even though we are not in an area where there are things stolen there is a lock on the gate. Every situation has to be judge separately. I have only seen deer and bunnys in here so far. Callie is 16 pounds. All our neighbors have dogs. |
OMG I can't believe it! I"m sorry you had to go through this Lynzy. A lot of people shouldn't own dogs, but that's how it is here, Me want, me get! Perhaps she will learn a lesson from this and that poor doggie didn't die in vain. How much you wanna bet the dog wasn't fixed either? |
All of my dogs go outside unattended, the little guys have cat door to come in and out, while the big ones are outside all day and only in at night. My fence has cinder blocks all around the perimeter so they can't dig out (Aussie was an escape artist), plus fence is 6 ft tall and checked regularly. We live in suburban/country. Very little traffic with creek seasonal creek between mine and neighbors yard. No coyotes, and few birds of prey since my lab scared them away when we first moved in 9 years ago. I think if the human is responsible for their pets and provides proper environment, there is no problem with dogs going outside. Accidents can also happen inside just as well. |
I'm so sorry you had to go through something so awful. It breaks my heart thinking of the pain that poor dog was enduring and his crying...and I can't imagine being there to see and hear it. Hugs to you and bless your heart for trying to help the poor baby. |
I agree. Small dogs should NEVER be left outside alone. I know, I know, some little dogs aren't very little, xyz yard is safe, etc. Nope. Not safe. We have a 17 pound dog and not even he is allowed out alone. WHY take the risk??? |
oh lynzy... I am just crying with you here. I don't understand either. I do let my guys out the back but I stand out there and count tails to be sure they all come back in. Even with me standing there the least one got out one time and I had to run through back yards in my pink pj like an idiot... but hey.. that is what I had to do. This just breaks my heart. |

To those that think it's okay because your dog weighs more or you live in the country blah blah blah. IT IS NOT :thumbdown |
