| Please Help! Sorry to post about my Maltese (this is Yorkietalk, after all) but I'm worried about him. Codie was neutered at 6 months of age. He's approaching his 2 year birthday and just recently (this past week), I've noticed his little red "pee pee" coming out. It's actually happened a lot this week -- about 12-15 times so far that I or my husband have personally seen -- and who knows how many more time it could have popped out while we were at work. I'm taking him to the vet after work on Friday for a check-up. But before I go, I'd like to have an idea of what I'm dealing with -- I always like to be prepared. Is this a big medical problem? Could it possibly require surgery? Why is it happening? ANY advice or info at all is greatly appreciate. Also, if you could post some links on the subject (if at all possible), I would truly appreciate. Thanks so much in advance!

| I recall someone posting a while back about this....it truly can be a problem, so don't think you are over-reacting. Please update after you have seen the vet and let us know what he/she says. Sorry I can't be of any help to you on this one. |

| Ok, I'm going to show my ignorance here. Feel free to laugh and point fingers at me Neutering shouldn't affect his penis. Is that what you are seeing 'peeking out'? I would assume that's completely normal. However, I have girl Yorkies so I really don't have a clue.

| I did a quick search and found this: You do have to take this problem seriously. Usually this happens because the bulbous glands of the penis have managed to engorge outside of the prepuce, which makes it difficult, or impossible, for the penis to retract. This can lead to problems if the situation isn't corrected. Often, we have to anesthetize the dog, lubricate the penis and sheath well and then use traction sutures to move the prepuce back up and over the penis. Sometimes it is even necessary to surgically widen the preputial opening. We try to avoid doing this, if at all possible, though. If the opening is too wide, the tip of the penis may stay extended and this appears to be pretty irritating to it. This is important enough to try to find an emergency veterinary care facility if you can not contact your usual veterinarian over the weekend. I'm not sure of this addresses your puppy's specific problem. I'll keep looking.

| By any chance does he have a hernia of any type? I know that they can cause this to happen in males regardless to if they are neutered? |

| Hmm...I really don't know, but I hope everything is OK. I just know we had that problem with a peke who had a hernia and we would actually have to get "it" back in by stretching? pulling? the skin on his tummy. Please keep us posted about this. |

| When you go to the Vet you might mention the possibility of a urinary tract problem either an infection or the possibility of bladder stones. If bladder stones are suspected the best way to see if there are big stones in the bladder is through xray. |

| Is it stuck out or does it just peek out and "go home?" Mine gets himself all "excited" when being brushed or scratching sometimes. Heck he even gets "excited" over certain visitors. good luck! |
