Scared about how big my puppy will be Bought an adorable Yorkie from a breeder named Julie here in South Florida. I was very picky about seeing the puppies parents. They were apparently her pets from what she told me and the mom was very tiny. So I agreed to take the last male puppy named Bentley whose an awesome addition to our family. The same day she called me and said she had more puppies that belonged to a friend and I started seeing ads from her frequently realized she was a reseller. Which is okay but when your honest about it. Did my research and realized she had been arrested multiple times for selling sick puppies!! Although my baby is healthy I have no clue what he will weigh as an adult. He's 3 months and weighing 2.1lbs. Does anyone have experience with weight?? I read some charts online but they don't seem accurate to me like the weight is too low. I just hope he stays small because I want to take him with me everywhere! Thanks for your help guys. |
Charts are just an estimate/guesstimate. It's really hard to say, bc puppies all grow at different rates. Many tiny at birth can grow bigger than their littermates, and sometimes the ones that are bigger at birth don't seem to grow as fast, or as much. I don't think there's any real true way to tell. |
That's sad on so many levels. My Yorkie is 16 pounds and she is the love of my life. |
Welcome to YT. Health would be my primary concern. As for size, there are no guarantees, but at 12 weeks you can double the weight and maybe add a pound to make a rough guess of the future weight of your pup. |

Anyway, now that you have the dog, please get familiar with Florida's puppy lemon law. You have rights! Florida Pet Lemon Law "...Consumers have 14 days to document contagious or infectious disease and a full year to document congential or hereditary defects.....The law provides for replacement plus reimbursement for veterinary expenses related to certifying the illness, up to the price of the dog. If a dog is proven ill or defect, consumers may demand a refund or replacement plus reimbursement of veterinary expenses up to the price of the dog... ...In the event that the consumer purchases the animal and finds it to have been unfit for purchase, the consumer must notify the pet dealer within 2 business days of the veterinarian's determination that the animal was unfit. The consumer has the right to retain, return, or exchange the animal and receive reimbursement for certain related veterinary services rendered to the animal, subject to the right of the dealer to have the animal examined by another veterinarian. The state attorney may bring an action to enjoin any violator from being a pet dealer. Violations are a first-degree misdemeanor...." I'm sure she is familiar with this law, as having been arrested multiple times. It would be in your best interest to have this pup examined by YOUR vet, and let her know the findings. |
I really hope you will love your puppy no matter his size... If you wanted to be sure of his adult size, you should have bought an adult. |
Welcome. I hope u realize that health is the most important and size is such a shallow minded thing to stress about... Teacup or micro size puppies are a trend and that's only because people don't realize that this is code for under weight or sick. Mostly at risk for future health problems. There's no such thing. A yorkie is a yorkie. Love him and hope he grows up big & strong. :-/ |
Quincy is 4yrs old and weighs 12 lbs. he goes everywhere with us. Vacation and all. There's just more of him to love! |
Hello and welcome to YT. We have a vast amount of wonderful information here. |

Scared? I would think curious about size. Health is most important. Welcome to Yorkie talk. As others mentioned...You will find all sorts of info here. |
Don't even worry about size as long as you have a healthy happy spoiled yorkie ;) trust me a 13LB yorkie can go any and everywhere.. I know because my Guinness does :p I am just hoping my little Stella starts growing because her tiny 5lb body scares me!! |
Honestly the weight is unpredictable. My two females are sisters from the same litter and Shadow is 5.7 lbs and Star is around 8 or 9 ( she was a chunky puppy) Either way it dosent really matter how big the mom is or the father is. Its more in the bloodlines. My oldest male came from a litter of pups that he was the smallest and he weighs 6lbs ( hes 7months) and his oldest brother is almost 10. both parents were 6-7 lbs. My dogs go every where with me. Theyre like my kids no matter how big they get. I still take my 27lb sheltie everywhere lol |

According to the AKC, yorkies should not exceed 7 pounds. There is no official category of them being "teacup", also all yorkies no matter what the size are in the Toy group. Yorkshire Terrier Page And as you can see here, all these breeds are "toy". AKC Breeds by Group - Toy Group There is no teacup group. |

Well said! I couldn't agree more. Please get the puppy to a vet. Also If I were u, I wouldn't let her get away with this.. |
Hi and Welcome to YorkieTalk! You will find a bunch of great information around here. My first Yorkie, was also from Florida and was given to me when my stepdaughter went into the Army in 2001. I honestly did not know that the term "teacup" was not appropriate, and that is how I described her until I found out differently. She also cost a bunch of money and found out later she came from an extremely disreputable breeder and this breeder was later banned from breeding. Unfortunately she was way too small and had way too many health problems. My heart is still broken when I think of her. I think if you stick around you will gain so much information. One thing I learned from YT, is that a healthy puppy is so much better than a small ill pup. Anyway, please enjoy our community. There are so many great things here. |
Im new also but i was one who wanted a small yorkie also so i searched for one that was older i found chloe she was 6 mts when I got her. she was everything I wanted. her ears were up her hair was very pretty and she was little. she weigh 2 pounds and 14 ounces today she is now 9 months old and weighs 3 pounds.. and let me tell i stay on pins and needles because of her size. for me I am always on guard even the vet says she needs to gain weight. unless you have nerves of steel .the littles are not always the best choice. Don't get me wrong I love her to death but shes a handle full.some yorkies can be veryyyyy hyper and Chloe is. when you see your fru baby leaping from the couch to the coffee table then to the recliner at only 3 lbs it is very scary. just wanted to give you my experience With a very little. |

As others have said health is the first thing to be concerned with..but your puppy's weight sounds right on for a 3 month old pup..at this rate of growth you will most likely have a 5/6 lb baby which IMO is a very good size for a small dog..:) welcome to YT |

Even reputable breeders estimate the puppies adult size!!!!! There's nothing wrong with that for every closed minded person on here!!! The term teacup may not be AKC recognized but its a term used to describe small puppies and there is nothing wrong with that. AKC is nothing but a registry like thousand others and they are not the god of anything. Most of us have smaller Yorkies. |

Now my quote is gone too :sidesplt: |
All I can say is wow. I sure hope you step back and think what you are trying to do here. Quote:
BUT...there is something wrong with not see that AKC is the "cream of the crop" registration for dogs. I don't understand how you could not be more upset about the breeder.. the health of your baby. You are more concerned with having a pup you can call teacup and the amount of money you have spent. Quote:
:thumbup::thumbup: |
Its not close minded its a fact that is someone give you a guesstimate thats all it is is a guess. One of mine should have been 3 lbs according to the growth charts shes 71/2. The other one should have been 5 lbs and hes 14. All pups grow differently and even knowing the parents weight doesnt guarantee it because your pup may take after a dog further down in its ancestry line |
And teacup is just a marketing term some breeders use to get more money for a pup |
