| Cleaning puppy's ears? Hello everyone!! Jake is now 14 weeks old today and is SUCH a joy! His ears are still a little droopy and i'm wondering should they be standing by now? Also....is it safe to clean the inside of their ears out? I know the groomer will do that, but, it's not time to get him groomed for the first time yet. I noticed that he has some gunk in there and i am starting to smell it just a little bit. Any suggestions or tips? |

| i use an organic ear cleaner that is safe to put in the ear.....and yes i would clean them out cause if not they are going to get infected. you can try putting the cleaner on a cotton ball to get the gunk out if you can reach it.

| Congratulations on your new pup! I agree, you can use a cleaner, preferably one with a drying agent. Moisture provides a breeding ground for things that lead to an ear infection. Any sign of dark gunk and smell should be checked by a vet, especially if your pup scratches his ears, shakes his head, or rubs his head on the floor. Those are signs of discomfort and pain from a possible infection. Also want to make sure he doesn't have ear mites. Ears may droop for for many reasons: the ear flap needs to shaved (hair can weigh down the ear), ear infection, or teething. Some Yorkies' ears never stand. Sometimes breeders will tape them for awhile to help them stand. Folded ears need extra attention because they don't have as much air circulation as standing ears.
