I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yogurt is usually given to provide "good" bacteria to the intestinal tract. After a round of antibiotics, good as well as bad bacteria dies, so it's helpful to add the good back in order to help you digest foods better. Once the bacteria are back in place, they should stay there and thrive, unless you do something that kills it again. I don’t know why adding it to the intestinal tract would help with the foot problems, so unless a vet told me to add some, I probably wouldn’t do it. If you decide to do it, always us plain, with no artificial sugars and make sure that it says "live culture." They do sell probiotic pills, but again, unless the vet tells me to do it, I woudn't do it.

| It could be a combination of issues that are creating his problem. I know how harsh rock salt is on a dog's feet. It is very painful to them and it is destructive to the foot pad. Just a small amount of that stuff can cause a big problem. If there is any chance of left over rock salt form the road or sidewalk try to avoid it all together by picking him up and carrying him through the area. If he does get some on his feet wash them well with your dog shampoo when you get home. They sell a protectant balm for dogs to have on their feet when they are outside in the winter. It's called Musher's Secret. Very hydrating and protective of their foot pads. It may help to protect him in case there is any washed out rock salt around. You can buy a pet safe rock salt but of course it is more expensive so very few people use it and the stuff on the road is always the bad stuff. The dampness of him licking his irritated paws can bring on red yeast. The wipes your vet gave you should help if they are antifungal. I hope the little guy gets feeling better soon. We have to change our walking route in the winter because of rock salt. Five more weeks until spring! Last edited by gracielove; 02-24-2013 at 04:52 PM. |
