I keep hearing the phrase "for the betterment of the breed" mentioned. I have heard some say breeds should not be crossed. And the op dogs were called mutts. So is it those member's opinions that in a perfect world, there should only be specific breeds and it is always wrong to cross breeds even if you follow all the other protocol about health and temperament and are breeding for families who are not interested in a registered breed because they only want a pet?

A very thought provoking question in the morass of this thread.

A healthy dog in our purebred breeding world can not "just be checked out by your general vet". They need breed specific tests, that often times requires specialist examinations. Such as eye CERF exams, HIP and Elbow Dysplasia, Thyroid, Heart. Hyperuircosuria Genetic test et al.

There will always be a huge divide between the purebreed world and what we would call "mistakes". Dogs of other breeds bred together. In the purebreed world, we do our utmost to health test, to post those results, to show and to only breed great examples of the breed. Well there is no road map on mixes. How will the health of Breed X mated to Breed Y turn out? We simply don't know. And we don't know how their temperament, coat, color, and so many other characteristics will be. Because they are MIXES. Breed here or there willy nilly with no documentation or follow up.

And so I ask you what in your mind is a pet? What size? What temperament? What coat? What color? what sex?

So is a "pet" a Orcarkhva mated with a Pyreness? A Neo mated with A Rottie?

Are you prepared to train these particular mixes or mutts? Because trust me those mixes will need a whole hell of a lot of training. And do the shelters understand this when they have a "mix" to place. Does the breeder of the mixes understand and scruntinize the potential owners for the high requirements of training, feeding and socialization necessary?

I deliberately postulated two very difficult working breeds mated together. But hey how about, a Rottie mixed with a Scottish Terrier. How would that temperament turn out? Never you mind the health. How about a Bull Terrier mixed with a Cocker Spaniel. A Collie mixed with a German Shepherd? A Yorkie Mixed with a Giant Schanuzer?

Nobody including the quote unquote "breeder" can answer that. Cause we just don't know.

Kudos to both a thoughtful question and thoughtful response. How refreshing to see a deviation from the "just 'cause you're not supposed'ta" and the (tired) lecturing styles that are such turn-offs. Very positive yet informative!

For everyone who wanted to see her morkie puppies I posted a album on my profile. She went to day 70 from her first tie! Well she was in labor yesterday when I woke up she was having contractions and I noticed they where not going anywhere so I called my vet took her in and we had to do a c section. She had 2 a boy and a girl Lexi is doing a good job being a mother. But I did spay her so she wouldn't have to go through this again I felt soo sorry for her I was crying! But I'm glad she is ok!

I'm glad she is ok, too. The puppies are very cute.

I think it was a good decision to have her spayed. You obviously love her very much to hurt for her like that. You did the right thing for her.

I am glad to hear everything is okay with Mommy and her adorable babies...sorry she had to have a C-section, though. Glad you took her in right away, too. Now that she has been spayed, she can concentrate her energies on just being a much loved (spoiled? lol) pet...and training you to do her bidding...with no more "oops" threat.

I am glad to hear that mom is well and the puppies are thriving at the moment. LOL after being on YT for a year I am now always nervous when people have new puppies to take care of. I know you know this but watch them closely, things can change in an instant. I am so glad you were home when she went into labor.

Oh yes yes I know!! My mom said the boys are the ones you have to watch and I have. They are both quiet so they are happy Lexi the mom takes good care of them she is a great mom but she still wants to leave them and come hangout with me but when she hears those cries she runs to them! But boy is she scarfing that food down I can't get her to eat the puppy food I really don't want her to get so hungry that she has to eat it so ive been making her homemade food like I was doing during her pregnancy because she is a very very picky eater and will only eat a couple of bites at a time but if its cat food she will eat it all so I had to fatten her up because I know how nasty their bodies are if you don't take care of them while they are pregnant and it worked she isn't skin and bones!

I want to take a moment to Welcome to the OP to YT although I doubt that she feels very Welcomed ....

I am sorry that your gal had to have a c section but very happy that the pups are healthy. Im also very sorry that you had to experience what a lot of new comer to YT in your situation have to. Although you dont (have to) because people have a choice in how they treat others regardless of what they post here. Such a shame that there are some member who just dont know when enough is enough. Its a never ending story with them, they tend to take things to the extreme!

I do hope that you will stay a member of YT. So that you can ask important questions about the proper care of the litter and after care of the mama by those of us who truly do wish to help.

It takes a special kind of person to go through this type of interaction with total strangers and stick around, but in the end it makes us stronger! The same thing happened to me, so I know how you are feeling about now. But I wasn't about to let these people get the best of me. I wasn't about to turn and run with my tail between my legs. They had me in tears on many occasions. But I'll be damned if I let a total stranger make me feel any less about myself or my decisions just because they dont agree with it.

Im here and Im here to stay.... Well unless my mouth gets me in trouble and I get suspended
