YorkieTalk Newbie! | Ears, Sleeping and Body Harness'! Hiya! MULTIPLE QUESTIONS: I recently noticed my baby Minnie has a hole in the edge of her left ear Is that a birth defect, will it cause problems, does it shows that the breeder I bought it from hurt her or negected her before I bought her or is it fine? Minnie's coat isn't the shiniest either.... Anything that could fix it? Minnie sleeps with me everyday, and I sleep with really cold A/C (air conditioner) Does that affect her? Help on that! Plus my bed is about 3ft tall, can she sleep on it? Oh and lastly, how big is her body harness (collar) supposed to be ? 13"? Thanks. Also, I have fallen in love with my yorkie. Literally. I love her smell, even when she needs to get a bath, I kiss her everywhere! I'm in love. Seriously, I'm glad I'm part of this site where everyone shares that feeling with me! Here's a picture from my best friends IG, mine's (julmariz) private so you wouldn't be able to see the pic. Photo by beingskinnyisbetter • Instagram

| I'm not sure what to tell you about the ear. It doesn't look like it's anything that would bother her, but I'd probably ask the vet about it. Maybe one of her siblings nipped at it when they were babies..? I think sleeping with you is perfectly fine, but you might want to give her a way to get up and off the bed since it's so high. She might have to use the potty in the middle of the night... As for the a/c, just make sure she has covers she can snuggle in with you if she gets too cold. The harness size will depend on her chest size. Get a measuring tape (like the one you use for sewing) and measure her chest at the widest part (just behind her front legs). I'd look for a harness that the measurement falls in the middle of the numbers so you can adjust as she grows. It doesn't take long to fall in love, huh? I can totally relate..Mandie had my heart the minute I picked her up from the people I got her from.

| I hear that cocunut oil or salmon oil added to their food can help with the coat. Of course a good shampoo and especially a good conditioner will help. The ear think looks like something naturally occuring or at the very least it has healed. So, I wouldn't worry. It's not like an open cut or ulcer. Check with your vet. Get stairs or a ramp so she can go up and down off your bed. You definitely dont want her jumping down.

| I think it is just the way the ear grew. Noting to do with it. Is it red inside or is it just the photo. If inside the ear is actually red I would be a bit concerned about that. Make sure you don't get water in the ears when bathing. When Gracie was a puppy and I had only had her a few days I was sitting on the bed with her and she was wrestling with a kitten that was the same size as her. Well, one wrestling move by the kitten sent Gracie flying off the bed! She injured her right rear leg so much that she could not bear weight on it. Off to the vet we went for an emergency visit. Thankfully, it was not broken but I took my bed off the frame after that and pushed it up against the wall so I could keep her right next to me at night. When she got big enough I purchased some pet steps so she can get up and down off the bed safely. She has slept with me since the first night and has never had an accident on the bed. I did keep a puppy pad in the bedroom when she was a baby though. If she woke up at night I would just put her on it and then she would go back to sleep. Many Yorkies get cold very easily. They do not have an undercoat like many dogs have. Gracie would climb under my blanket when I had the AC or a fan on. She prefers tropical temperatures. I do have to put sweaters and coats on her when it is cool. I would make sure your puppy is warm enough. Give her a nice warm soft blanket to cuddle up in when your AC is on. It is hard to get little puppies to wear clothing but as she gets older you can start putting some loose fitting shirts on her to train her to wear clothing if she gets cold easily. |
