| ![]() hey guys , iv had alot of cats in the past, and im ready to move onto a dog! I love in an apartment with my parents, im still in high school.. i really want a yorkie. i'v done my research ( past couple months) and iv decided yorkies are the perfect dog for me, play full, get along with my 2 cats . and are live and energetic dogs. NOW !! iv heard there very fragile, so im afraid if my 1 year old kitty will want to play with him something might happen. can anyone reassure me its gona be okay =P the land lord dosent allow dogs here, but im sure i can convince her since a yorkie is smaller then a grown fat cat =P ( almost typed in car LOL!! ) I have some questions, iv been reading that they do not need ALOT of exercise since they run around your house all hyper and everything so how long should i walk a yorkie? Im thinking of geting one whos either young, or medium, im thinking somewhere in 1 year mark, so there trained not to pee all over the beds etc etc. iv also read that they bark alot? is that true ? i hope not =\ any other personal tips you guys have or anything like that would be helpfull too!! THX!! |

| ![]() EVERY Yorkie is different. You get lucky and find one who is housetrained, but that's VERY rare. These little guys can be very stubborn and you have to be very dedicated to train them. But once you're up to, they make, in my opinion, the best dogs ever! If they are very very small they can be quite fragile. But make no mistake, they are tough cookies inside! Some bark a lot, some don't. A lot of it is in the training. Bouncer rarely barks, unless our doorbell goes off. Then he's a madman, ready to eat whatever is hiding on the other side of the door. haha You have come to the right place though. Welcome to YT! And if you need anything at all, feel free to PM me or anyone else. There is a wealth of information on this forum!

| ![]() I think you should get written permission from your landlord before you get your dog. Where do you plan to get him or her? I see you live near Chicago.

| ![]() If your landlord doesn't allow dogs, don't assume you will convince him to allow a yorkie just because it is small. Yorkies are great watch dogs. Unfortunately this means that they like to bark at anybody or anything that is unfamiliar to them and in an apartment this could mean constant barking. If you get past the landlord issue than a yorkie may be great for you. My yorkie gets along great with my cat. Cat is twice the size of the dog and the dog constantly beats up the cat (in a nice way, of course). Try not to get a really tiny yorkie. They are very fragile and could be prone to illness. Would this be a pet just for you or a family pet? The reason I ask is if you are in highschool you are gone a good chunk of each day and are faced with the possibility of leaving for college or whatever in the next year or two or three...A college student does not have time for a yorkie.

| ![]() Im attending college and recently moved away from home. When I got my Yorkie in high school, it was the "familys" pet but we bonded together. I told my parents that I wouldnt move away to college without her, and I know my Yorkie would of been heartbroken as well. So, be careful, they are addicting ![]()

| ![]() Que - My Yorkie is 14 weeks old. He runs the entire house. He is not afraid of any other dog, and wears my 4-year-old Bichon out. He loves company, loves children, and loves all my neighbors. He does have a lot of energy - but he still sleeps alot. Most dogs do sleep a lot. He has tons of room to run and play in my house. My house is large, but he would have just as much fun in an apartment. Your puppy will probably not be afraid of the cats and will delight in interacting with them. If he gets scratched, he'll just stay a little further away and still enjoy them. Your puppy will learn to stay out of the cat's way, if they bother him. Otherwise, he'll enjoy teasing them. But, they can easily get up on something where he can't reach them. No problem there! Yorkies are small - and you have to be careful with them in many ways because of their size. But, they are far from fragile. They are really very tough little guys. As sweet as he is, my little pup occasionally growls at me in an effort to get me to do what he wants me to do. I tell him "no no," and then he just runs off to play somewhere else. My Yorkie is sweet, loveable, and playful. He loves my other dog and totally wears him out at times. My Bichon has literally drug the little Yorkie (who is hanging onto one of his ears) to me begging me to get him off. I have had my Yorkie two months or so. He barks, but so far he is definitely not much of a barker. My other dog doesn't bark often, so the little Yorkie is the same. My dogs usually bark when someone comes to the door and when they see someone outside in the yard. I would expect your having only one dog will help keep the barking down a lot. But, yes, they can bark. You can really keep this to a minimum if you discourage it. You may have trouble getting a Yorkie that is a year old or so (no one wants to give their Yorkie away). If you get a pup, don't take one from its mother until is is at least 10 or 12 weeks old. You can find tons of information on this forum about potty training a puppy. It is always a deal to go through (and perhaps even more so with a little Yorkie), but you can do it...just be prepared for some accidents along the way. Good luck -- Carol Jean |

| ![]() i think poo'ing would depend on your feeding schedule. but as far as pee'ing. at 12 weeks, bunjee pee's all the time. like 10 times a day. and poo's twice a day, at around 8:30am and 9pm with 9am and 6pm feedings. but an adult dog might be able to handle your school schedule. but first and foremost i agree with the above posters. you need to get your landlord's approval before you get a yorkie. 'cause you don't want to get the dog then have to give it away again or get your parents in trouble with a notice, fine or eviction for not adhering to the terms of their rental agreement. |

| ![]() From what i've heard and experienced yorkies are stubborn when it comes to potty training ....and yes they do bark a lot..most of them. It is their nature to "protect" you. They don't need a lot of exersie but will probablly need to be let out potty more often as they have smaller bladders etc. If you want really good info on the breed read Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. Good luck. ![]()
