I'm actually totally stumped and stressed about the situation. There will be another new dog there too, my bf's brother's gf's dachshund rescue who is elderly and frail. Luma can't control herself around new people. She has potty accidents, barks, whines, runs around and jumps on everyone. We've tried everything...we usually end up having to leave her in a crate at my bf's dad's house while we all go next door to his grandparent's.
If you have a good place you trust to board her, I would. She has no idea it is a holiday and would probably prefer a place that gave her some peace and quiet over the stress and possible injury of the little dog at the grandparents' home. You can check on her as necessary, have them Instagram pix or watch her on livecam with some of the places that board. You can make it all up to her with a "Luma Weekend" the next weekend and cater to her every whim complete with a visit to the pet store and some wowie new toys and indulging all her wants at home. It will probably be easier for everybody and she'll be tucked in safe from an aggressive, territorial little toot who doesn't want to share its people or home or the older dog who could be crotchety. A stressed dog is one who might take any chance to dart out the door or get pancreatitis or have any number of unpleasant things go wrong.

This is going to be Joels first Thanksgiving! But the people that will be here is everyone he's already familiar with, and the only food he'll probably get is vegetable type stuff.
Rosco has to be gated out since he can just reach anything off the table or counters lol
But he'll still get some food

You tell Roscoe Tibbe said he'll come help him break out and they'll make a mad dash for the table and raid it and run off fast if Roscoe promises to share a turkey leg with Tibbe! Heck, it's just one leg and nobody will miss it!

Thank you! I really believe this is our best option. It's sad, but works best for everyone. She is so smart and well behaved at home. Oh sure it was cute when she was a puppy...at 10 months its getting old how she can't control herself, forgets her name, won't listen to me....leh.

They do go through their independent phases!!! Often! hahaha If she gets too bossy, you might try out a little Nothing In Life Is Free for her and get her back on track with you as her total provider of needs but only after she's acknowledged and performed a simple, fun little act of obedience. Immediately you reward her with what she wants with a smile and affectionate little praise to go with. It is the quickest way I know to get the little toddler in them to sober up and remember they do have to keep on behaving and doing what mommy says even when they begin feeling their oats and finding "a better way" than what mommy says. Little stinkers sure are strong-willed but that's what we love about them!!! A few little things here and there though can bring them back in line soon though if some fun is injected into lessons.

If we have young children over, the boys are crated, unless one of us, has eyes on them at all times.

If the children are in high chairs the boys can be out for dinner as they have been trained to stay away from dining/kitchen table. Their rewards for a good down stay is da bonne homme!.

If it is all adults - the rules are no one feeds our dogs unless they ask us, and absolutely no treats from the table.

There is very little in the way of food my boys don't like. Sometimes they will turn their noses up at strawberries, but once they see "moms" eat it, we are all good to go when berry season is back!

If our company has dogs strange to our boys, our boys are crated while dinner is on. That is because mainly our friends have rather large dogs, who don't know each other well. And for holiday events one should have a relaxed and peaceful dinner. Then maybe before dessert our guest dogs are fed and treated, then they are crated and our boys are let out for their dinner, treats and pets. The adults enjoy dessert and coffee, and maybe a liquer.

After that all dogs are walked - truth to tell it can be a very short walk but still a walk.

Then we all enjoy the wkend. If we sleep overnight at each other homes, all dogs are crated overnight for the safety of all guests and doggies.

Egg...shell and all?!? lol I don't think Ahi would like that. lol

She will be either in my lap, in someones arms, or in my bedroom. She only gets a few bites of turkey and she's happy as a clam. She will turn down food if it's too fancy for her. She took only a couple little bits of steak last night and turned down the rest. Actually she took a piece of steak and "burried" it in my daughters pile of clean clothes. LOL That is how I know that she is done eating...she starts to hoard.

LOL LOL LOL. Tibbe is a food-hoarder, too! Back when he got a tidbit here and there, I had to watch to be sure he ate it right then or I could find it placed under a decorative throw pillow or in a nook in the living room!

Chachi and Jewels and 2 of my cats Pumpkin and Miracles will be looking longingly at us begging for us to give them some food. We will give them a little white meat turkey and some green beans and they will be happy. I give the other cats a little tuna because they dont eat people food. Pumpkin and miracles are our piggies

My dogs are on a BARF diet, I give some kibble to suppliment. Some peoplekibble feed eggher shells like bones, I do not personally. I crack the raw eggs in their bowls.

This morning I dumped half the bag on the floor and they all just watched as I swept it up....go figure the one time I actually wish they'd eat off the floor they were all acting like well trained angels!!!!

During Thanksgiving or other family/guest dinners you can bet if not kenneled or in another room for safety etc they'd all be right under the table waiting patiently, silently wagging tails looking as well behaved and cute as can be ready to pounce at the oppertunity of a dropped food bit or someone snealing them something.

Holiday dinners at my house typically, it's not too crowded and Troy is relaxing in someone's arms or snuggled in his bed. He is not allowed in the kitchen or at the table. We don't like dogs near us while we are eating. Just how we were brought up.The kids will try to sneak him to the table or sneak table scraps but they are given a good talking to when they are caught.

If the holiday dinner isn't at my house, Troy is at home in his own space waiting for us to get home.

Animal Smiley 019 Do Your Dogs Love Or Tolerate The Holidays?

Tibbe loves everybody and loves all dogs, especially any that walk through our front door, will play rough and tirelessly, even with young dogs who keep on coming and jumping all over him. He loves people and the more the merrier, greets everyone often, nags for constant attention! Jilly always hated to have other dogs approach her or jump on her in play or anything. She tended to be very quiet around other dogs and only diffidently approach people, though she liked people.

Do your dogs seem to really like or just tolerate holiday get-togethers?

LOL with the cats. I get the idea many cats rather resent the invasion of their private kingdoms and just opt out of busy, hectic dinners attended by people they don't know well. My friend at work put her cat in the bedroom bath one Thanksgiving and she said it was thoroughly trashed when they went up later after company. The cat had even reached under the bathroom door and unched a whole throw rug on the other side of the door (lying atop carpeting) underneath the door and into the bathroom and the cat was lying on that when she opened the bathroom door! She said she feared some child might wander into the bedroom and bother the cat but thought she'd be safe in the bath. Kitty apparently disagreed with her imprisonment and had her way with all my friend's nice towels, bath salts, perfume and things!!! She said Kitty disappeared and she couldn't find her in the house until the next day!!! She was in a spare bedroom closet up in top, behind boxes! Had her back to the closet door and didn't say a word or look around as she fetched her down! Said it took a whole day to get Kitty to approach her again, purr, etc. She was majorly p.o.'d by her afternoon shut in the bathroom! Talk about a little queen!!! (Well, she wasn't little - she was a Maine Coon - a sturdy girl!)

Everyone in my family knows that NOONE feeds the dogs but me. The only person that I would need to be concerned about wont be at Thanksgiving this year. We will be in our travel trailer, with all 5 dogs and two daughters, twitch. My DH will be making our dinner over a fire in dutch ovens. The doggies will get something special before and after dinner.
