| I wasn't talking general anesthesia. Just thinking the vet would at least deaden the area with local anesthesia before zapping the older dogs. I think if I had something that size put under my skin I'm gonna INSIST on a local! That's gotta be an ouchy for an older dog who has a goodly nerve supply in the area of the neck, between the shoulders. If done as infant pup, doubt they can sense much pain from it, though this area would tend to have a greater supply of nerves, etc., than a leg or tail. Tibbe didn't get chipped till he was over 9 mos. old but he was under a general for his dental or neuter, thankfully.

| All shelter dogs are microchopped here...if getting altered they may be under for it otherwise its a poke and done. The humane society offers the service as a fund raising service no dogs or cats are under. I've seen it done many times only twice I can think of did a dog yelp...one of them was mine. To be fair he was yelping as soon as he saw yhe gun like needle coming

| No idea but she said it hurt like heck and she was sore and couldn't move her neck for 3 days! I don't think it was the "one" poke it was the 6!

| Neither of mine were under anesthesia when they had their microchips implanted. They didn't really seem to notice it was being done.

| Both of my cats were microchipped without anesthesia, but Couv and Khloe were under for their spay/neuter when they were chipped. It is done all the time without anesthesia... I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's a quick poke and it's done.

| Ok, all the replies make me feel better. I just thought the microchip would hurt more. It's off to the vet she goes to get her microchip put in. Thanks to everyone that responded.

YT 1000 Club Member | BTW: When doing something like that (which may cause them a "little" pain), I let the Tech or Vet take them into another room, away from me. I'm NOT skittish about such things, I just don't want my guys to associate pain to/with me in ANY way. Reunions are FANTASTIC !

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | KS had hers done when she had her spay, but if the vet gives the ok, I would feel comfortable going forward. Hope all goes well!

| Injecting Lidocaine to "deaden" the area, STINGS!!!! Do you remember having a PPD (TB ) test, where they slowly thread that tiny little needle JUST under the skin, then inject the solution right under the skin, making a little bleb? THAT hurts more than injecting the micro-chip! |

| When I had Soph done 6 years ago it was without any kind of anesthetic or anything. She didn't even flinch. She actually fussed and showed more reaction to the vaccination she got and it was a much smaller needle. |

| They do have topical products that numb the skin but once the needle is in they would still feel it to some extent. Lidocaine can sting when being injected so it would kind of defeat the purpose. If you have a good vet they should be able to do it very quickly. Some dogs (and people) tense up before and injection and so it is more painful than it should be. Just try to get her as relaxed as possible before they do it. |
