Does anyone Doggie Diaper at night for itty bittys?? Our new little chi has been sleeping in her bed in a laundry basket with a pup pad next to it to try and keep her from pottying in her bed. I know she's too little right now to control her bowels and bladder AND even if she can control them, she can't hold it that long.. I was thinking about making my own diapers for her to wear at night time so she doesn't keep having accidents on her bed, I don't want her to get that scent on there and start thinking it's her potty or something? Good idea? bad idea? what do you all think? |
I think its a bad idea because if she pees she will have to lay in it all night possibly giving her a rash, irritation or infection. Plus it would be uncomfortable to lay in pee all night. |

I noticed you said she's sleeping in a laundry basket, is she able to easily get in and out? I ask because normally puppies don't like to potty in their sleeping area unless they have no other choice. But maybe someone more experienced can weigh in and give an opinion? Also just my opinion of course but I don't think I would diaper her at night. Even if she does have an accident in her bed she can shift and find a dry spot, but with a diaper she can't. |
How old is the pup? |
She's just tiny, 12 weeks old. she can't climb out of the laundry basket easily, the bed is in one end of the laundry basket and there's a pup pad in the opposite end so she has a place to go potty other than her bed. I just worry if she keeps going potty she'll get that scent on her bed and start thinking it's her toilet. |
I used diapers with my puppy when she was still small. It's a mess and none of the design work perfectly, but it did teach my little girl not to potty in the bed. She slept in my bed from the beginning (all my dogs do) and she peed on the bed during the night. Not impressed, I used the diapers to teach her to control herself in bed. She only went in them once or twice before she got the picture. |
My goal is more to just use them until she is big enough to control her bladder/bowels. I don't think she's old enough to control it. Hmmm... I don't want to punish her, she's not being bad, she just can't control herself yet, I was thinking of using diapers until she's old enough to have more control at night time, but I don't want her sitting in yuckies all night either and I don't want her feeling like she's being punished or something... if she was old enough to control and having accidents I might consider it as a stop or you have to wear a diaper like I would for my kids, but I certainly don't want her in them long term... Lots to think about! |
When we first got ours I got the play yard from Wal Mart and placed pee pad at one end and their bed at the other, they quickly learnt to use the pee pads. Do you have room for the play yard, I really like the one we got from Wal Mart. |
I have one, but it takes up a TON of space in my house, I used a baby gate in the kitchen for during the day like if I'm showering or something, but she sleeps on my bed, the laundry basket is in case she has an accident, I don't want doggie pee or poo in my bed... LOL Soooo... decisions, decisions! LOL |
well in my opinion i think it would be better for the pup to get a medium size dog crate . On the end towards the back put a pottty pad and in the front put her bed . put the crate on the floor next to your bed and put a blanket over the sides to make her feel secure. imo the doggie diapers are a bad idea because if she does soil them in the night and you do not wake to change them she will have to sleep in that all night. Very unsanitary and worse if she poops in the diaper... |

Puddles sleeps in a portable crib with her "bed" on one end and a potty pad on the other. This worked great. She is in the process on sleeping with me until my husband comes to bed (he's a night owl and I'm asleep soon after dark). He puts her in her "bed" when he comes to bed because he is scared he will roll over on her. When she was really little, I would put a potty pad on the end of my bed - just in case. She never has even used it, but I never go to bed with her until she potties. |
I'm sorry, but it sounds like to me you want a quick and easy fix for potty training. If your pup is giving indications that she needs to potty during the night, get up and take her outside or to a potty pad, let her do her business and then go back to bed. Putting a diaper on her is likely to confuse her and make her think it's okay to just go and not let you know she needs to go. If this was your child, you would get up and take them to the potty.... |
