I would suggest a X pen for your puppy. Diapers are not going to teach the pup anything except that it is OK to pee when ever and where ever she wants to. You need an area large enough for to walk to her pee pad and for her to have her bed at least a few steps away from it. I realize she is small but a laundry basket is not the set up you need. |
Uh, no, lol. That sounds like a terrible idea. Just take the dog outside and wake yourself up in the middle of the night. |
While I get what you are saying and I am sure you are thinking in the best interest of your new furbaby I don't think a diaper is a good idea. My husband and I took shifts with our elderly Boxer for 3 months when she started losing control of her bladder. We would rotate nights where we would wake up and take her outside between 2 and 3am so she didn't have an accident because at that point she would just lay in it. I think maybe you should set your alarm and take her out each night to potty. Once she is able to control herself she should be fine to sleep through the night. |

I definitely would not suggest using diapers. Most of us have gone through the puppy phase and it means not sleeping through the night. You need to set an alarm if she's not waking you so that you can let her out. She will not be able to hold it through the night for a couple months at least... The joys of puppyhood :) |
Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions, I already am getting up with her in the night, but when I say she pees like every 10 minutes, she pees every 10 minutes.. haha. I'm already getting up to feed my 1 year old daughter 2 - 6 times per night depending on the night/partially due to a car accident we were in. I think maybe she just needed a couple nights to adjust, because her bed has been pee/poo free for 2 nights now. *IF* I were to put her in diapers (which I'm not), I would change them throughout the night, not just use them as a "quick fix" so I don't have to get my butt out of bed at night. I'm in bed from about 12:30/1am to 7am getting up 2-6 times every night, clearly, I am not looking for a quick fix. I was, however, looking for a fix to having my puppy laying in her own pee all night/getting her pee/poo scent on her new bed and starting to use it as a toilet instead of a bed. On a happier note, LOL 2 questions, what kind of shampoo do you use on your furry friends, and, can I clip pups nails (just the clear tips) with sanitized nail clippers at home? |

As for shampoo, we have been using Minksheen and love it. It is an antibacterial, a concentrate (so we dilute it quite a bit with water), a natural insect repellant and has a great scent. I purchased small dog clippers at Petsmart when I got my two and they work great for clipping nails. Get her used to having her paws touched and nails clipped young and you will be able to do it. Lots of people here have to take their pups to the groomer to have their nails clipped, but if she's used to you doing it... You won't have to. |

i think if you take her out just before bed whenever you get up during the night she will be fine... just consider the crate idea , it may make her feel more secure during the night. as for the shampoo a good quality puppy shampoo is fine.. of course you can cut her nails yourself. i dont cut oscars cause i am wimp. lol i take him to the vet. |

I'll look for that shampoo, is it sold at petsmart as well? I definitely want her to get used to us clipping her nails. :) Thanks again for being so helpful! |

I never said that she had to lay in her pee or poo all night. Geez. |
I can see why you would think this may be a solution however I think it would confuse her on what she is supposed to do hindering potty training |

Mandyangel it will all work out, hang in there with the potty training. Best wishes to you and your family with your little Yorkie. |

i am glad your pup is doing better. what is her name? yes , you are welcome to stay. a lot of what you will learn here you can apply to your chi . yorkie is a great place. i myself learn something new everyday |
Poor pup is still nameless... I have suggested several and nobody seems to agree on anything.. I've suggested: Sadie Katie Aurora (Rory for short) Jasmine (Jazzy) Jessie Bella Nala I'm about to just pick one and start using it... LOL I'm sure there will be some differences between the two breeds, but I'm sure there will be some similarities too. ;) |
