| New Yorkie Owners New first time puppy owners. Just looking for general advice. She's SOOO cute. Doesn't bark much either, except when we leave her room. Again, I just want general advice on what to do. |

| Welcome to Yorkietalk! Congrats on your new puppy. . How old is she? I got both my girls past the puppy stage. I got one at 6 months and one at 1 year old. I would suggest getting some Nutri Cal to keep on hand in case of low blood sugar. I would also get some teething toys if she is really young. I missed that stage with both my girls. . Also, has she been checked by your vet? With both of mine we took to the vet as soon as we got them. We got them started on thir heart worm meds, updated on shots, etc. You are at the right place to get advice. I have learned so much here! Again, welcome!

| Congratulations on your new baby!! I strongly recommend two books that will be of a great assistance for many years to come, thru all stages of your baby's life! "Yorkies For Dummies" is a fabulous reference guide to raising a Yorkie...."Yorkshire Terrier: Smart Owners Guide" is the second book...it is interactive somehow...my computerskills are almost non existant, so I have no clue how THAT works, but they say it is interactive....there is a "CD" or "DVD" included ....it is a small training tutorial. Read these two books and you will be very well informed about your new baby and what you can expect to encounter. How old is your baby, how much does she weigh? Has she had all her puppy shots yet...if not, do not expose her to any other dogs or a lot of strangers or out in public....parvo lurks around every corner and is highly contagious and is very debilitating/deadly. Welcome to YT....you will get tons of tips, help, and advise from a wide variety of owners/breeders/trainers/groomers/show people/groomers/seamstresses/ and many others! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new puppy! Each section of the YT forum has sticky posts with great information, and as others mentioned above, there is the YT library and great books to read. The best advice up front that I can think of is 1) Do the Yorkie Shuffle -- be careful where you step and sit....they can sneak up on you and get underfoot 2) Start training right away -- basic commands, potty training, grooming training. Be patient and consistent and work a little each day on these things. Short sessions are best. Touch your pup all over to get her accustomed to being handled for grooming. 3) Make sure your house is puppy proof. Review a list of dangerous substances and foods. Have emergency numbers and directions and your vet's info on hand. I blogged about new puppy supplies and basics here: New Puppy Supplies - Dog Life and Style Do you have any specific questions? Don't hesitate to ask!
