I almost killed Tinkerbell tonight... but she's okay now...

Started out giving Finny a bath. Tink came in the bathroom and started rolling around on the wet towels, so I thought I'd throw her in the tub too, while I was in there and she was in the mood.

I towel dried Finny and she stayed in the bathroom while I was bathing Tink. When Tink was done, I towel dried her, and let them both run around for a bit. Then I began blow drying Finny.

A bit later, Tink tried to get into the chair with my stepson. He carried her over to me, saying she was shivering, bad. She was, so I immediately put Finny down and started blow drying Tink to get her warmed up quickly.

I never do this. With Peek a Boo, I always dried him right after his bath. I keep hearing on here about folks letting their dogs 'air dry', and seeing picks of two dogs in the tub at the same time. Plus it's summertime, and I don't keep it too cold in the house... if I move I sweat, lol.

I never thought she would get that cold, but it was scary. I'll never do that again!

Anybody air dry your dog, or give baths to two at a time? What's your secret?

BabyGirl Rosie 08-17-2012 06:35 PM

Oh poor baby! I don't give my girls baths together. I also don't air dry. I bath one, dry her, brush her out, then start the next. Both are really good about baths but I don't want to take any chances.

Poor Tink!!! I give Brody a bath, then let him run around and air dry (he's actually very skilled at flopping on the towel and drying himself off!) He does have a lot of fur though, so it takes forever. While Brody's off flopping around, Sophia gets a bath. Sophia air dry's and is totally dry in ~5-10 minutes. Neither of them have ever shivered though and I do keep it pretty cool in the apartment.

Oh poor tink

I air dry remy.. I have three and she is the last to get her bath. She is the fastest. I towel dry, comb and let them go. I have never blown dry they...if she acts cold I wrap her up in a dry towel or blanket and cuddle her till she warms up.

RachelandSadie 08-17-2012 08:10 PM

it's warm here so we bathe both and towel off and they run around and dry themselves on EVERYTHING! it's bath zoomies. but we've never had a shivering moment like that before. eeek sorry hope ur heart is ok now. :)

I bathe both of mine and always blow dry Couv while Khloe air dries for a bit. She's always really excited to be dried after Couver but we haven't ever had any issues.

I'm kinda confused though... You say you almost killed Tinkerbell? Did you really think she was going to die?

If she didn't go to my DS when she did, I may not have looked for her for another 30 minutes or so. She was shivering so badly when she put her feet on DS's chair, he said the chair started shaking, which made him look down and see her. When he handed her to me, her hair was still quite damp, and her skin and feet were very cold. Normally the hair would feel cool to the touch, but then you would feel warmth from the skin. I felt her all over, there was no warmth anywhere. That made me very concerned and I felt she was in distress. I'm not sure what would have happened if she would have just went and laid down somewhere. If her body wasn't successful at generating heat, she would have become exhausted and gone into multiple organ failure. But it would have been my fault for allowing her to remain damp after her bath instead of blow drying her right away as I usually do.

This may have something to do with her LS or just the way her body works, though I'm unaware of it being mentioned in any literature. I do have to dry my senior dog after his bath, as he does get chilled quickly. With Tink still being so young, I just didn't expect anything like this to happen with her.

I shower all mine never use standing water really we use the hand held shower sprayer only and they air dry in a steamy bathroom I am usually more concerned of them getting overheated, so I open the tiny shower window.

I always towel dry we don't always blow out. So bad I know but we're all dlacking since baby was born in our appearances.

I felt so bad the time I let Elvis go in the kennel and then fell asleep with baby thankfully he was snuggled under his blankets I think he got a little chilly though he was definately burrowed down.

Laddy can dry himself in a matter of minutes almost completely dry. He uses the carpet lol. Kyra I always blowdry because her coat would mat up if I let her dry like Laddy does. She does tend to shiver lots more than Laddy. I figured it is because she is such a tiny girl.

in the fall and winter i wrap in a warm towel from the dryer to take the chill off then blow dry.
in the summer which is very hot here i just let him air dry...

Sunny95 08-18-2012 05:03 AM

Ginger takes a shower with me instead of a bath in the tub. Then I use the blow dryer for just a couple minutes to get her started on drying. I don't completely dry her. Then the rest, she air drys. In the winter, I will spend a little more time with the hair dryer but not in the summer.

MamaZiggy 08-18-2012 05:41 AM

Ziggy was never a fan of the drier so I have always air dried, BUT we always have the heater on for him during this time.

I only have one, but I really learnt something with this post for when I have two, I will not wash then together, like Rhonda said. This should keep this from happening.

I'm glad Tink is ok:)

MikaTallulah 08-18-2012 08:50 AM

I use a mixture of air dry and force dryer on mine. Zoey (RIP) loved her hair blow dried but only with a human warm air dryer. Roxy wants to be done quick so I do a quick force dry on her and then let her go when she still damp. Lucy and Cozy prefer their own version of a spin cycle- They run around in circles throwing themselves down the ground and onto blankets to roll around. All get blow dried when it is cold though until they are mostly dry.

Buddy the Golden Air drys and then gets Force dried to finish.

I think some of these babies just cannot maintain their body temperature very well. Gracie is like that. I never put her down until she is totally combed out and dry, even in the summer.

We are now enjoying temperatures in the mid 70's and I have had to put her winter pajamas on her and she was all wrapped up in her fleece blanket until the temperature got up to 75 this morning!

In the winter I have to turn the thermostat up to at least 78 before I bathe her. I purchased a Rinse Ace from PetCo in order to get her washed, rinsed and out of the sink as fast as possible. I couldn't stand to see her shivering in the sink. She has a nice long coat but it does not seem to be enough to keep her warm unless we are having tropical weather.

kjc 08-18-2012 09:09 AM

Thanks for all the replies. I'm seeing this is an isolated problem. I said 'bath' but it is a shower with a Rinse Ace attachment. I plug the tub and let it fill about 1 inch or so to soak their feet a bit and soften their nails before triming. She never appeared chilled during the shower. I was also more concerned with the overheating factor as the weather has been hot here lately.

She was fine and doing the 'after shower zoomies' when I started drying Finny, so the chill came on fairly soon after that.

I did find an article that said a possible thyroid problem could cause this, so I'll have the vet check on that. Today she's acting her usual, hyper butt self.

Just something else to watch out for being a Yorkie owner, I guess.

Tink has a long, silky coat, and weighs around 15 pounds.
