I almost killed Tinkerbell tonight... but she's okay now... Started out giving Finny a bath. Tink came in the bathroom and started rolling around on the wet towels, so I thought I'd throw her in the tub too, while I was in there and she was in the mood. I towel dried Finny and she stayed in the bathroom while I was bathing Tink. When Tink was done, I towel dried her, and let them both run around for a bit. Then I began blow drying Finny. A bit later, Tink tried to get into the chair with my stepson. He carried her over to me, saying she was shivering, bad. She was, so I immediately put Finny down and started blow drying Tink to get her warmed up quickly. I never do this. With Peek a Boo, I always dried him right after his bath. I keep hearing on here about folks letting their dogs 'air dry', and seeing picks of two dogs in the tub at the same time. Plus it's summertime, and I don't keep it too cold in the house... if I move I sweat, lol. I never thought she would get that cold, but it was scary. I'll never do that again! Anybody air dry your dog, or give baths to two at a time? What's your secret? |
Oh poor baby! I don't give my girls baths together. I also don't air dry. I bath one, dry her, brush her out, then start the next. Both are really good about baths but I don't want to take any chances. |
Poor Tink!!! I give Brody a bath, then let him run around and air dry (he's actually very skilled at flopping on the towel and drying himself off!) He does have a lot of fur though, so it takes forever. While Brody's off flopping around, Sophia gets a bath. Sophia air dry's and is totally dry in ~5-10 minutes. Neither of them have ever shivered though and I do keep it pretty cool in the apartment. |
Oh poor tink I air dry remy.. I have three and she is the last to get her bath. She is the fastest. I towel dry, comb and let them go. I have never blown dry they...if she acts cold I wrap her up in a dry towel or blanket and cuddle her till she warms up. |
it's warm here so we bathe both and towel off and they run around and dry themselves on EVERYTHING! it's bath zoomies. but we've never had a shivering moment like that before. eeek sorry hope ur heart is ok now. :) |
I bathe both of mine and always blow dry Couv while Khloe air dries for a bit. She's always really excited to be dried after Couver but we haven't ever had any issues. I'm kinda confused though... You say you almost killed Tinkerbell? Did you really think she was going to die? |

This may have something to do with her LS or just the way her body works, though I'm unaware of it being mentioned in any literature. I do have to dry my senior dog after his bath, as he does get chilled quickly. With Tink still being so young, I just didn't expect anything like this to happen with her. |
I shower all mine never use standing water really we use the hand held shower sprayer only and they air dry in a steamy bathroom I am usually more concerned of them getting overheated, so I open the tiny shower window. I always towel dry we don't always blow out. So bad I know but we're all dlacking since baby was born in our appearances. I felt so bad the time I let Elvis go in the kennel and then fell asleep with baby thankfully he was snuggled under his blankets I think he got a little chilly though he was definately burrowed down. |
Laddy can dry himself in a matter of minutes almost completely dry. He uses the carpet lol. Kyra I always blowdry because her coat would mat up if I let her dry like Laddy does. She does tend to shiver lots more than Laddy. I figured it is because she is such a tiny girl. |
in the fall and winter i wrap in a warm towel from the dryer to take the chill off then blow dry. in the summer which is very hot here i just let him air dry... |
Ginger takes a shower with me instead of a bath in the tub. Then I use the blow dryer for just a couple minutes to get her started on drying. I don't completely dry her. Then the rest, she air drys. In the winter, I will spend a little more time with the hair dryer but not in the summer. |
Ziggy was never a fan of the drier so I have always air dried, BUT we always have the heater on for him during this time. I only have one, but I really learnt something with this post for when I have two, I will not wash then together, like Rhonda said. This should keep this from happening. I'm glad Tink is ok:) |
I use a mixture of air dry and force dryer on mine. Zoey (RIP) loved her hair blow dried but only with a human warm air dryer. Roxy wants to be done quick so I do a quick force dry on her and then let her go when she still damp. Lucy and Cozy prefer their own version of a spin cycle- They run around in circles throwing themselves down the ground and onto blankets to roll around. All get blow dried when it is cold though until they are mostly dry. Buddy the Golden Air drys and then gets Force dried to finish. |
I think some of these babies just cannot maintain their body temperature very well. Gracie is like that. I never put her down until she is totally combed out and dry, even in the summer. We are now enjoying temperatures in the mid 70's and I have had to put her winter pajamas on her and she was all wrapped up in her fleece blanket until the temperature got up to 75 this morning! In the winter I have to turn the thermostat up to at least 78 before I bathe her. I purchased a Rinse Ace from PetCo in order to get her washed, rinsed and out of the sink as fast as possible. I couldn't stand to see her shivering in the sink. She has a nice long coat but it does not seem to be enough to keep her warm unless we are having tropical weather. |
Thanks for all the replies. I'm seeing this is an isolated problem. I said 'bath' but it is a shower with a Rinse Ace attachment. I plug the tub and let it fill about 1 inch or so to soak their feet a bit and soften their nails before triming. She never appeared chilled during the shower. I was also more concerned with the overheating factor as the weather has been hot here lately. She was fine and doing the 'after shower zoomies' when I started drying Finny, so the chill came on fairly soon after that. I did find an article that said a possible thyroid problem could cause this, so I'll have the vet check on that. Today she's acting her usual, hyper butt self. Just something else to watch out for being a Yorkie owner, I guess. Tink has a long, silky coat, and weighs around 15 pounds. |
Poor Tinkerbell. I think Tatiana would have been that way, too. She's small (3 lbs), and sometime have trouble maintaining her body temperature. That's why I blow dry her right away after every bath time (no delay). She's my only dog, so it's easy for me to do that. Also, when the weather is cold, a doggie sweater is a must for her. |
I shower both of mine and blow dry both...I keep my house on the cooler side in the summer...cant stand the humidity up here. In the winter i keep the house really warm...dont like the cold either!! Must be a female thing.... |
Hmmm that's odd. Nope, Jax has never been blow dried. He always just hops out and air drys. None of the dogs here have ever shivered that badly after a bath and all air dry... |
Oh my gosh. I'm glad she's ok. I let mine air dry all the time without any problems. |
I'm glad Tink is doing great now. Maybe it is the fact that they don't have the undercoat that other dogs have that helps to create this problem. Gracie has a silky coat, too. My Shih Tzu had a huge thick coat and never had an issue with being cold in or out of the bath. My Maltese was the same way. I have to say the Rinse Ace has helped the situation a lot. It works so much better than having to stand there pouring water over her with a cup. We are in and out in just a few minutes time. I wrap her in a big towel and sit down and comb her out and blow her dry right away. She hardly ever shivers anymore. It has been a learning experience with this little one. |
Maybe it has something to do with the water temperature...like us going in a cold pool will get you shivering like no other when you get out. I remember reading along time ago about the water temperature a dog should be bathed in compared to humans and thought it rather cool. ZoE likes a warmer bath, which works for me as I often just take her in the shower with me for a quick clean up. Glad to hear Tink is doing better. Hopefully it was just a one-off thing. |

Now, both of them run like their buts are on fire after I towel dry them, up the stairs on to my bed and roll and snort and drag and scratch the bed etc, like lunatics without their meds...very funny to watch though! After one of them almost falls off the bed is cue for me to start blow drying, first Miss Mini and then Miss Mia who patiently waits her turn...(hates the bath but loves the blow dryer...go figure) Miss Mini is well behaved for bath and blow out! Miss Mia is quite the character...!!! |
I bathe and blow dry each of mine. Even the ones with a thicker coat end up shivering if I don't. I guess my house is too cold....oh well, they all look forward to "spa" time... |
In the summer, I towel dry Abby only, and then she rolls around on the couch and/or in her bed, and i will let her walk out back on the patio in the sun for a few minutes. In the cold winter, while I'm bathing her, her towel is being warmed up by a heating pad on low setting so it's warm when I wrap her in it, and then we go in the bathroom where I've plugged in a little portable heater and closed the doors to get it very warm in there (plus i make sure to turn up the thermostat for the furnace a few extra degrees) where then I blow her dry! So much easier to give her a bath in the summer! |
Thanks everyone for all the replies. I'll see what her vet has to say about this tomorrow. |
I take Milo upstairs to the big room with all carpet to dry. He loves to run around and dry rolling around and rubbing against the couch and chair. When he gets tired he will come and get in my lap for me to blow dry him. He loves the blow dryer to. I think it calms he to. I love watching him run and dry himself. He is so funny and wild. |
3 Attachment(s) I am so sorry what happened with Tink...I wouldn't want mine to shiver from cold so I wouldn't want that for your babies either. I am glad everything is okay. I do not air dry my Yorkies, I always blow dry them, matching the heat setting to ambient room temp so they are never too hot or too cold. In the winter, I set up a small space heater to warm that corner of the room during their bath and blow dry. Like I said, I do not want them to shiver or be either cold nor too hot. I do bathe together, however, with no issues whatsoever. They do not always get baths together...sometimes one needs an interim bath from a bad poopy placement...usually from the wind blowing their hair in the direction of the placement...dirt digging, etc., but their regular bath time has been tandem for many months now. I bathe together, pluck both out of the tub together, and blow dry together while they plow in a big fluffy towel. When they are sufficiently dry, and they each know when, they will individually lift their heads up so Mommy can blow dry under their chins. Last, we blow dry paws, then there's the comb out, after which, all pretty from Mommy's brush, they promptly adjust their looks to a properly mussed coiffeur. :p Here are some pix...DH marvels at my tandem bathing carry hold...which is quite easy and they are quite secure and seem to love the group hug, so he took pix, then after DH took the second photo of me carrying both, I noticed I was wearing the same shirt as in the first photo...too funny...but it is seersucker, really comfortable to move around in, and dries in like 30 seconds and I do like it for bathing 'cuz I am not certain who ends up wetter...them...or me! :D |
Jaeger always shivers a little. I generally wrap him up tight in a towel for awhile, and sort of rub dry, then towel dry, then he does the "bath zoomies" hyper dance around thie house. I dont use a blow dryer. |
I towel dry mine, brush them, and then let them air dry. I tried the blow dryer and they FREAKED OUT big time! They run around, roll around, etc. Then I brush them again after they dry. |
Do you all use a blow dryer or a dog grooming blower? I use a cold air option Andis right now, but I'm thinking about buying a real dog blower. I was just afraid they wouldn't be warm enough... |
