| Lactulose - side effects The specialist put charlie on lactulose to help reduce ammonia that would lessen the amount of stones he would get. I had to order it special and it came in last night he had his first dose 1ml (script is for 1ml 2 times daily) but this morning around 5am he threw up. he was fine afterwards so later on I gave him his first dose for today and fed him. now he is also on Metronid benz 1ml daily and 5mg prilosec I went to work and hubby called me around 10am letting me know that Charlie had thrown up again. He has been doing excellent but when we started the lactulose he started witht he vomiting. I called the specialist and she stopped the lactulose but said she wasnt sure that it was the reason. she hadnt know that to cause vomiting with the low dose he is on. Im wondering if all the meds together might be the issue you know maybe to much all at once. If anyone has personal experience with lactulose I would love to hear from you. I vertainly dont want to start going backwards with his health. Thanks

| The only thing I have heard about Lactulose is that too much will cause diarrhea. Our Tink takes it 3 X daily and has never thrown up from it. I've even given her 1 mL each hour to bring on diarrhea during an episode of Hepatic Encephalitis and she didn't vomit then either.

| Maybe you can administer 1/2cc, 4x's a day.....check with the vet....maybe start with 1/2cc 2x's a day, then up to 3x's a day, then 4x's a day.....maybe he just has an issue with it......I am sure it can cause nausea and vomiting...that is a side effect listed on EVERYTHING!!! I do know it can cause diarrhea....maybe starting it slower, in smaller dose, will help Charlie take his medicine....maybe 1/2cc every 6 hours...that will be spaced out evenly over 24 hours.... |

| Well we did not do the lactulose last night or this morning and there has been no vomiting. the specialist did say that once he has transferred totally to the royal canine diet that we would try again but by cutting the dose in half. the bad thing is he needs it desperately but he cant tolerate it. poor baby

| If he really needs it maybe giving it in smaller amounts at different times during the day would be better? Does he have to have it on an empty stomach? Usually things that are not well tolerated are better given on a full stomach. That way it goes into the digestive system slower. Maybe changing the timing and the order that you give his meds will help. Prilosec does help with stomach issues so maybe give the lactlose sometime after the Prilosec has had time to take effect. |

| Well, no lactulose and no problems. I wonder if there is something different he could take. Ill have to call the specialist and see I guess. I had thought about giving him a dose to see if it made him sick I just dont want to be the one to make him sick but would like to know for sure if that is what it was. and thoughts on this?

| I give Tink hers right before or in the middle of her meal. It works best with food in the tummy...no food, no amonia to be removed...

| well the 2 doses that he had were mixed into his meal along with the other meds so an empty stomach wasnt the issue, I just think its to many all together his poor belly cant tolerate all the medicines

| This was my first thought. Probably be best to space the meds out during the day, even if that means smaller more frequent meals Praying for your Charlie

| I hope they can come up with something else that he can tolerate better. |
