Long hair with clothes definately requires alot more brushing.... before clothing goes on and immediately after clothing coming off, along with the regular daily grooming. But, I still LOVE A LONG COAT
That's me a slacker lol. I hope to grow it out once at least when she gets older but who knows.

I keep a brush beside the front door because of all the debri they collect but I absolutely love the long coats. Also like you I brush before and after clothes and harness time.

Foe me I love the long coats. I feel that is what makes a yorkie look like a yorkie. I've never cut any of mine down. I have one with a VERY thick coat he's like washing a bear, I brush him once in the morning and he's set for the day. Besides he's a bit long in the body so if I did cut him down he'd look like a wiener dog....

At one time I had four boys, they all had long coats and they all had ponies too, I don't mind but I can see why someone would cut theirs down.

My cotton coat is short, my silky coat is semi long. They are both active outdoors, so realistically I should keep them both short. The longer-haired one is a relative mess about six days a week. I have to clean her up for therapy dog visits once a week.

But I've resisted because she looks SO GOOD after grooming. Makes for great pictures.

I have had several kinds of long haired dogs. I always say I will never have another but then......I get another! My Shih Tzu had a huge thick coat. I kept it long for about half of his 15 years. It was a lot of work but he was just so gorgeous in full coat.

I do love the look of a long haired dog and I guess that is why I have always been attracted to them. When I was working full time and had kids it was a challenge keeping up with the coat. If people are not dedicated to the upkeep of long hair then they should be dedicated to getting the dog groomed regularly.

Gracie has a nice silky coat. I now have time to groom her and she has learned to accept her daily grooming. (sometimes more than daily) It is something that requires the right tools and products to keep the coat looking good and tangle free. I think that truly she would have preferred to be born a smooth coated Jack Russell Terrier but she is still just as much of a little character in her long hair as she would be in short hair.
Long or short the coat does require regular work and if a person does not want to be bothered with that then they might want to consider a short coated breed instead.

I keep Raley's body very short, legs fairly long and head/face/beard medium. He has silky hair.

I adore both, but for us a shorter cut is a bit easier. Katie Scarlett has a bit of a cottony coat. I can grow it out and keep it long but it takes ALOT of work. So we cut her short for summer but I am already thinking about growing it again in the winter. I think it really depends on personal preference and lifestyle. If you have the time/money to devote the attention a long coat needs, I'd say go for it. That flowing hair is just gorgeous!!! But the short cuts are cute too! It's so hard to choose for me!

I will soon have two girls and my boy..Orion. Raelle has a silky coat and I keep her hair long, Jersey hasn't come home yet so I have no idea what her coat will be like. I would like to keep it long, but we will see. Orion I tried keeping long....oh boy! He would fight to get the topknot out, and was just a general mess. I think he is a cotton coat, so off to the groomers he went..he's in a puppy coat. Shoot he even goes after Raelle to get her topknot out when I've finished grooming her! She fights him tooth and nail though...I think she likes being all prissied up! LOL!

I love the long hair. Both of my girls have long hair on the body. Rosie has the long beard and topknot as well. But I keep Mikki's face short. I think the long hair is so pretty. However, I think if you cut it short the pups are still adorable. I believe it is a personal preference. Just know that long hair does require more care. My girls get brushed all the time.

Just a word of encouragement to those with puppies who want to let the hair grow. My Gracie was as fierce a puppy as I have ever seen. But I started running the comb through her hair (quickly) at least twice a day. By the time she was 7 months old she had become much more tolerant. (Giving a yummy healthy treat when you are done is a great motivation) It is a process of training. The same with the bath. I had to have someone help me hold her when she was younger in order to bathe her but I did it without fail weekly. Guess I finally won. She is 2 now and is so good about baths and grooming. You would never know she is the same girl.

The more you do these things the faster they will get accustomed to it and accept it. I also suggest working on basic obedience training with your dog so it knows you are in charge. If you let your dog think it is in charge you have lost the battle.

Even if you choose to keep your dog's coat short it is still going to need baths and occasional grooming. Training your pup to get accustomed to being handled is good preparation for the future. If my little terror can learn to behave I'm sure yours can, too.

My yorkie has been in a short hair all his life (he is almost 3), but I would love to grow his coat because they look adorable. He is mostly silky so I know he's a good candidate, however, the reason I keep him short is that he has been suffering from itching from unknown causes. It wouldn't be fair for him to grow his coat now and give him a harder time as I don't know if it's fleas or other parasites (he is on a strict flea preventative but still).

So, identify your yorkie's coat type, them determine how much time you want to spend grooming.

Troy has very straight hair. But I like it kept short because I lead to busy a life to maintain the longer hair. I like the long hair but I just think it's just too much for me and my family.

What's cuter or functional depends on the family and their individual preferences.

Ally has a silky coat and I keep her hair long. Tia has a cotton coat and looks absolutely beautiful with long hair, but I've trimmed her hair (short/medium....not shaved) because of the matts. We comb every day and it became just torture for her so I trimmed it to make it easier for her. So....I have one of each.
