YT Addict | Antibiotic causing depression? This past Monday my son took Rylee to the vet to have her ears checked. She had been shaking her head and also scratching at her ears quite a bit. Besides that, she was fine......... The vet checked her out and said that her ears were inflamed and that she had allergies. He put some drops in her ears and of course sent my son home with the drops also. He also gave Rylee a shot of Baytril and then of course sent home the pills. From the time he gave her that shot.............she has been in a depression. She isn't sick...........she is eating and having all normal bowel movements but she just lays around looking depressed. She doesn't play too much and wants to sleep more. This morning she seemed completely back to normal and then when my son gave her the pill...............she got all quite again. I have a call in to the vets office but in the meantime, I'm curious if anyone else has ever experienced this?

| Tibbe does the same thing on medication of almost any kind, but antibiotics just put him in sleep/lay/eat mode. That's all he wants to do.

YT Addict | I'm taking her back to the vet tomorrow................I can't take this. She is so lethargic. I've never seen her like this before. She lays in my arms and just sleeps. The odd thing is............if we let her go outside in the backyard, she runs around like she is fine?????? Barking and running all over the place. It truly is like depression. I looked up that drug and it did say that was one of the possible side effects although very rare. This takes me right back to when my boys were little. It's like having a baby all over again! Sometimes I think she "plays" me just a little bit. She knows how worried I am and takes complete advantage of me. Am I crazy????

| Awhile ago Brandi was on buprenex. She was out of it for like 12 hours. She was okay but just a little lethargic. I call the vet too but they said to just keep an eye on her. If she experiences any trouble breathing, if her heart rate slows or if her gums turn white to bring her |

| IMHO, I agree that if she is eating and drinking normally, she probably is just feeling a little icky from the antibiotics. The only other thing I could think of is that if her stools were really loose from the antibiotics, then maybe, she might have a little bit of dehydration which that electrolyte imbalance could definitely make her feel tired. That happened before with one of my little ones, and my vet had me give a small dose of pedialite that he figured dosage by his weight. But, if not, then hopefully just combination of antibiotic and her body fighting off the infection she has. But you as her pet parent definitely will know best, and if you think she needs to go in, I'm certainly not saying not to!! Hope your baby feels better soon!! |

YT Addict | Thank you SO much...............all of you!!!! Thank you for the input everyone!!!! Took her back to the vet on Saturday. All my Vet could say was "I have never had this reaction before" (I really think he thought I was going to sue him or something). I let him know that I had googled it and that Rylee's reaction was "rare" but textbook to a possible reaction. He changed her to Amoxicillin and she is completely back to normal (thank goodness). We were pretty scared there for a few days. I literally could snap my fingers right by her ear or stand in front of her calling her name and she would NOT respond! When I googled it, I read a story about another small dog with the exact same reaction, so I knew I wasn't crazy!!!! By the way...........her ear infection is almost gone also!!!! Don't know what I would do without all of you!!!!
