Grieving over the passing away of my 4yr old 3 pound baby yorkie Ace
I lost my 3 pound baby yorkie Ace last Thursday. He was 4. He is the love of my life, my hero, and my baby.
We took him to the Vet last Tuesday after he had been puking and not eating. He had stopped puking after a few hours and was drinking water and he held that down fine. He also was running up the stairs and jumping around. However, he wouldn't eat, which is not like him. He also could not get comfortable. We scheduled a vet appt. but had to make an emergency visit to closest vet hospital after he began vomiting and loose stool, no diarehhea though. He wasn't able to stand. When we took him to vet they thought he had a stomach virus, although they did an X ray. The vet came in and said his xray looked fine and showed us what she said was food iin his stomach. Husband and I said it couldn't be food because he had not eaten in a 2 days. The vet acted like we were idiots and said it was food. My husband said he felt something hard in his stomach. The Vet checked Ace's stomach and Ace lightly moaned. She said he could have eaten a sock? My yorkie has a tiny mouth! She said they had to treat him for the possible stomach virus first then if that didn't work view it as an obstruction. He stayed overnight with antibiotics, fluids, and pain medicine. The Dr.the next day said his white blood count still low and he wasn't responding to the antibiotics. She said he needed an ultrasound to pinpoint what was in his stomach and would have to go to a 24 hour vet hospital becasue he was going downhill fast.
We rushed him to the hospital and they didn't even need ultrasound, looked at x ray and felt stomach and knew there was an obstruction. He had surgery. They pulled out a hairball half the size of a fist. We have no idea where he could have gotten that, as he is closely watched. The vet said he had to ingest it all at once in and it was done 12-24 hrs before he got sick.
After surgery the vet gave Ace a 50/50 chance of survival. He said he was worried about sepsis, which Ace later developed that night. We got a phone call that he also developed fluid in lungs, and then he went into cardiac arrest and they did CPR and oxygen but couldn't save him. He passed 7/19/2012. All i want is Ace back.
I'm having a horrible time. My baby was young and healthy and in the prime of his life. I'm looking into filing a complaint with the first vet we took him to. She should have listened when we said he hadn't eaten, but she instead treated it like a virus and kept him overnight. I feel because they wanted to make money. I've had a yorkie, named Smokey, before Ace and he lived until 15. When Smokey passed it was awful but Smokey was old and had lived a full life. Even though when Smokey passed I really couldn't funtion for a while, it was heartbreaking. But the passing of Ace is a tragedy, he did no live a full life and was in pain from that hairball before his passing. I don't know where to turn. The house is so empty. Everything in this house reminds me of him. My husband and I don't have kids, Ace was our kid. Ace was there in my life before I was married. HE was there in a time of my life when I had no one, but him. He kept me sane and made me feel loved and safe. Ace was my hero and my knight in shining armor. If I would kill a bug, Ace would be there kicking his feet back and wanting to attack that bug. Ace would bark at thunder. I wish I could be as brave as him. He was a spitfire and the most beautiful yorkie in the world. I will post pictures to show everyone.
I don't know where to go from here. The injustice and tragic passing of my baby is unbearable. I would give everything for one more day. I prayed and it didn't work. Why? Hug your yorkie babies daily, because you never know about life...Two weeks ago my life was so much easier, I always knew how grateful I was for my baby and felt so lucky to have him. Most people don't understand and say "it's hard losing our four legged friends"
This angers me because he was a baby and the circumstances are horrible. Has any one ever gone through something similar? I just want to wake up from this nightmare.

I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace little Ace.
I would be upset too that the first vet did not consider obstruction.

Ace sounds like a special little man and I know his terrible loss will be with you a long, long time. Losing our best friend is one of life's toughest trials so go ahead and let yourself grieve hard for as long as you need. One day though, that awful pain you feel now will start to feel better and you will know you are healing normally - not being disloyal to your baby - just healing as he would want his mommy to do. We know Ace is at the Rainbow Bridge now, healthy and well and enjoying the rewards of being such a good dog to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. ♥

One must do the best one can. You may get some marks for a very imperfect answer: you will certainly get none for leaving the question alone. C. S. Lewis
