This is so funny to me. I have been trying for weeks to get pictures off my digital camera where Tini's eyes don't reflect green like that. I think it makes her look possesed. Interesting that it may indicate coat type. So far Tini has a very silky coat!

BTW, does anyone know what flash setting I should use on the camera to avoid the reflection?

Mojo looks silk without the green in his eyes...what a kiss face!

I have a friend who took her Yorkies to the vet for eye checks after seeing the green in photo's...she is a retired nurse and was positive it was a disease. In children a white spot on the eye in a photo can mean a tumor.

I went back on all the many pictures i have taken with my digital camera. Not one has any flash color in Schatzie's eyes. Weird deal??

Now, Annabelle my Schnauzer I found a couple with a flash mark in her eyes and also the same for a Brussel's Griffon pup I had for a short time. I even went back to look at pic's of Half-Pint (RIP) and again as Schatzie, no flash colorization in her eyes.

I kinda find it hard to believe that the flash means anything other than the light reflection just as red eye in pics of humans...Just my opinion though.

I thought it was a joke at first myself..so I asked a canine eye doctor in MD about 20 yrs ago..he had a long explanation for it, I do not recall the terms he used. I will ask a breeder I know in Delaware, she wrote an article in the Yorkie mag some years ago explaining it.

The eye color theory seems to always be true to me. Here are some examples of silky coated Rocco and soft coted Cecilia. Cecilias' eyes are always red.

Pat, see if you can get the article...i was just talking to Mojo's breeder yesterday and she never heard of it...i asked the kennel vet and nothing there either...maybe it is an american thing?

I tried yesterday to take his picture in the dark..hehehe after 983215521 million attempts i finally got it, i used 2 different cameras, one that has a little red light (which is suposed to reduced the red eye effect) and a simpler camera that doesn't have it...with the first camera his eyes reflected a bit of yellowish white with the other no reflection or just white...

As per Mojo's coat, it is very silky, i can go for 2 or 3 days without brushing and not have any problems...but i do find it to be thin...i wish i could feel the coat of a show dog to compare

The quality of reflected light seen varies with the breed and coat color type of the animal; animals with a tapetum will have a bright fundus reflection of yellow, orange, or green, while those without a tapetum usually have a red fundus reflection (produced by the choroidal vessels). Regardless of the color, the fundus reflex should be uniform throughout the pupil, and be free of aberrations. By examining the fundus reflex, the clinician can accurately estimate the amount of light reaching the retina, and thereby estimate the quality of sight. For example, in an animal presented with the complaint of blindness suspected to be due to cataracts, which has a reasonably normal fundus reflex, blindness cannot be attributed to lens opacification. The same principle applies to opacification anywhere within the eye, including the cornea, anterior chamber, lens, and vitreous. Once an opacity has been identified, it is examined in more detail using other techniques.
P.S. Tapedum is the reflective substance within the dog's eye.

The pupillary light reflexes are affected by the psychic state of the animal, room illumination, age, many topical and systemic drugs and the intensity of the light stimulus. Older animals may exhibit slow and incomplete pupillary light reflexes resulting from atrophy of the iris sphincter muscle. This is common in small dogs, especially poodles. The pupillary margin may have an irregular or scalloped appearance. Incomplete iris atrophy may give an irregular pupil shape.

When speaking with my breeder’s vet he explained the following:
The Tapetum Lucidum reflects all the light that passes the retina to the end of the eye and then back…so it will reflect 2 times (going in and going out). There is cases that this light reflected by the tapetum is not reflected in by the retina and it is just reflected out by the pupil…the tapedum is a shiny membrane that may have different color like green, blue, yellow and even white.
When the eye reflects red, what may happen is that this animal doesn’t show this membrane (tapedum lucidum) or has some deficiency in it. Cats, for example, don’t have this membrane.

I saw blue in a few pics (mostly puppy pics), but the telltale picture is #35 (sixth one from end with the blue barrette). Definite yellow (or is that orangey-yellow?) in one eye. Anybody else see this or am I crazy? lol.

If you look at the collages (sp?) you can see the reflection in a few pics.

OKAY, I fess up! I am the friend that YorkieRose mentioned who took her dogs to the vet. I had 3 dogs' pics and each had a different color. That was just before I had a wonderful mentor sort me out! Off I go to the vet with THREE dogs, their pics and a credit card to pay for my demands to find out what was wrong with my dogs eyesight. I cannot tell you what a dunce I felt like when all the dogs were pronounced with perfectly healthy eyes and my bill was pronounced astronomical. I KNOW FOR A FACT that the eye flash is accurate. One of the studs I used had CHARTREUSE eyes and they could be seen even in a low light room. And, he sired the most gorgeous puppies-I always used him with my mom with the amber eyes cause he helped harden up a softer coat..

You are totally right...i have to say i was lazy (oh boy...Mojo has a lazy moma..hehehe) and just looked at the pictures on top...hahahaha His eyes also came out yellowish yesterday with one of my digital cameras...also my chihuahua's eyes uses to come out yellow too, so i donnou where it reflects one of my walls that is a deep orangey color...hahahahahaha
