I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Ha ha that is so cute, their noses are so unbelievably sensitive, I'll bet he can smell the difference. Way to go Chachi! By the way, we had a fish that would go into our skimmer when it was pregnant!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | She just went into the basket, we had the major tube covered with filter. When they girls are ready or in season or whatever they say about fish, the males will chase them relentlessly. They get pretty banged up with all the male attention. I meant no pun, but now I wonder if that's how the words "banged up" came to mean pregnant? Anyhow, the girl may have cuts/bleeding on her and you think she's sick, but she isn't.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We really dug it deep, and it's shaded by a large tree, thank goodness for the skimmer because we have a lot of leaves that fall in the fall! Also, I've heard that the waterfall helps keep it cool. The pond never gets above 80. I think ideal is between 65 and 75 and acceptable is between 35-85. Make sure when you add water, you run the garden hose first to get rid of the hottest water. I'm not sure if that will make a huge difference there, but the water coming out of our hose will burn your hands. I just place it on a tree for a few minutes, by the time it sinks into the ground it's not so hot.

| The pond place by our house said we just needed it 18 inches can you believe that and the ones they put in are only that deep. We did ours 3 feet and its still getting too warm and I have a walnut tree by one end of it

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't think the pond place you talked to had very good information. A goldfish might be able to survive that, but Koi are 100 times more fussy. I think you should be pretty safe with three feet, we did ours over 4 and I wish we hadn't. Do you have a thermometer? Be sure to measure, at a deeper level, not the surface. We keep one in the skimmer. There are things you can buy and make to make your water cooler.
