We really dug it deep, and it's shaded by a large tree, thank goodness for the skimmer because we have a lot of leaves that fall in the fall! Also, I've heard that the waterfall helps keep it cool. The pond never gets above 80. I think ideal is between 65 and 75 and acceptable is between 35-85. Make sure when you add water, you run the garden hose first to get rid of the hottest water. I'm not sure if that will make a huge difference there, but the water coming out of our hose will burn your hands. I just place it on a tree for a few minutes, by the time it sinks into the ground it's not so hot.
