I don't think the pond place you talked to had very good information. A goldfish might be able to survive that, but Koi are 100 times more fussy. I think you should be pretty safe with three feet, we did ours over 4 and I wish we hadn't. Do you have a thermometer? Be sure to measure, at a deeper level, not the surface. We keep one in the skimmer. There are things you can buy and make to make your water cooler.
