| Does anyone recommend Sport Mix Puppy food? I am pretty new here, but the information I get from YT is PRICELESS! I am new to the yorkie breed. My little guy (Freddie) is almost 8 mos. old, I have had my precious pup for almost 5 months and I am absolutely in love with him. I love the yorkie spirit, devotion and the intelligence (and much more). I am currently feeding him Iams (puppy). I was also giving him Pedigree puppy soft food, I was told by Oscars mom that the Pedigree is a no no, and I sure do appreciate her help and advise. It doesn't seem like too many of you feed your yorkies Iams either, at least I have not heard any of you talk about it. Wondering if you have heard or recomment Sport Mix? I work full time, my husband can't drive the nearest "pet store" is 1 1/2 hour each way. Any advise would be appreciated, I want the best for my little guy! Thanks! |

| I have not heard of this brand but I looked at the website at the puppy formula and the first two ingredients are chicken by-product meal and ground yellow corn so I would not feed this to my pup. When corn is one of the primary ingredients on the list, that is an automatic no-go for me. I also like to see real meat (chicken, deboned chicken, etc) or a meal (chicken meal...not the same as chicken-by-product meal) as the top of the list. It's just something that I can glance at to quickly determine whether I will eliminate or do more research on a potential dog food option. I would rather spend more money on a higher quality food that my pup will need less of and not spend money on something that is just going to come out the other end undigested. Toki started out with Blue Buffalo (which you can get in Petsmart/Petco) on the chicken and oatmeal puppy formula which she did well on. We're currently feeding her Fromm's grain-free Beef Frittata Veg kibble (very affordable! but not available in chain stores) which she loves! I am looking to eventually rotate Fromm's grainfree with Acana and Nature's Variety Instinct. All of these brands have either no grains or good grains (oats, brown rice, millet, etc) and have a good source of meat in them. What options are available to you in your area? Do you have any local independent pet stores or even a Petsmart/Petco? Would you be willing to order online? Post pictures of your pup too! |

| Welcome. I feed mine Nature's Variety raw and in the evenings I feed a small about of NV kibble along with green beans, peas or other veggie. If you live too far from a pet store try ordering online. Good luck with finding the right food for your little guy.

| The thing with yorkies is that they don't eat very much, so if the nearest petstore is a 3 hour drive, if you could make a point to go out once and buy a few bags, you would only have to do that a few times a year-we've had Jaeger since he was 10 weeks old and he's nearly 7 months old now, and has only been through a bag and 1/3 of 2 8 lb bags of food. We feed Authority Lamb and Rice from Petsmart, I've honestly never heard anyone here recommend it (and we may be switching, looks like he may have food allergies) but there are no speciality pet stores near me, so unless we make a point to go to a store when we are in Atlanta once a month, we'd have to order online. I don't think any of the big box stores (pet or otherwise) carry the "favorite" brands of this forum. |

| I looked at the Sport Mix. I would not feed by-product, corn, fat, and meat meal (aka mystery meat) as the first 4 ingredients. I was burned by Purina do am now super picky about my dog food. I feed FROMM- Fromm Family Foods Gourmet Dog & Cat Food, Naturally Holistic They have never had a recall. I do give fresh fruit and veggies everyday. If lazy I will give SOJOs or Honest Kitchen as a topper on their kibbles. You can buy most pet foods online and get them delivered to your door. Feed what works best for you and your dog.

| Thank you everyone! I have all your suggestions written down so I'll check it all out. I think I will order online for now, than when I get to the "big city" I'll buy extra ! I'm so glad I found this sight! It's great to know I'm not crazy worrying about all this stuff! I can't help it I love my little guy and I want him to be healthly, happy and do what's best for him. My next worry will be the neutering! (hate to even think about that) Oh, and the rabies which he is due for. He got soooo sick when he received his last puppy shot! Thanks for being there you guys! I CAN'T tell you how much I appreciate the help! Lana |
