I did a stupid thing

I love watching the dogs react to youtube videos and especially love watching Gracie (the exbreeder we rescued.) Whenever she hears puppies she comes running and does everything but backflips trying to find them. The other day she was on my lap doing her thing when the rest of the furbutts came in to see what was going on. When I went to put Gracie on the floor she started growling and trying to get loose so she could attack the other dogs! Talk about protective! I couldn't let her go because she was hell bent on getting one of them. Then she started shivering.I had to take her out of the room and give her to dh so he could calm her down.

I felt so bad for her. We think of these little females being bred over and over again and feel sorry for them but now I have even more reason to hate the breeder. I wonder how many puppies poor little Gracie has had and how hard she had to fight to keep them safe. I wonder how young they were when they were taken from her. I wonder how much she misses having puppies around.

It is just sad and I feel really bad about exposing her to such emotional turmoil.

Oh no! I never thought about that.... by accident a commercial came on with puppies crying (or mewing) and both of my adopted ex-breeders went nuts trying to find the puppies.... though they came from professional breeding environments and were only each bred 2-3 times before being retired. I don't do that often, but my one girl just loves any You Tube videos, and rushes to get on my lap to watch... especially barking dogs. They have never become defensive with each other or my other two.

That is sad when you think what they must have gone through, the puppy mill moms. Is she ever defensive just with you toward the others? I know that can be the case sometimes with rescues too.

Oh, how heartbreaking, poor little thing, some places take them away so early, they don't even care if lots of pups die, just get them to the pet store young. One good breeder here told me it's especially hard on a mama, when their little one dies, and it's really important to handle it propertly, or they will look and look for their baby. Again, thanks to all of you, who rescue and have learned that you can give these little ones a second chance at life. On a side note, I can't even watch a youtube without Joey going nuts when he hears pups, I don't know what that's about!

I had a boy yorkie many years ago who used to do that. Whenever dogs were on the TV, he'd try to jump into it. He never went crazy when he saw dogs in person though. YET, he did love to watch TV!!!! I miss my Rex.

My old rescue/foster (the mom of my jet)
Is now a foster mom herself she is fixed but her new family noticed she was still produceing lots of milk
(She moved to her new family when her pups were 16 weeks so they had plenty of time) so they called the humane society and local rescues and soon a momless litter of 2 came along. She nursed them and cuddled them and then they grew up.

Is it possible your little girl could do something like this I have even heard of moms who don't nurse they just clean and cuddle and teach pups how to behave

Aw, poor baby, she's been through a lot.

My girls that are mom's go crazy when they hear a puppy whimpering. They try finding it and then come up the computer pawing at it. They never get defensive or aggressive though.
They were good mom's and their puppies didn't leave until 12wks or older and by that time they were happy to see them go.
Each of my mom's has a daughter I kept and I think it helps. They have a special bond with them.
Destiny is 6 and her oldest daughter is 3 1/2 and they still cuddle and wash each other's faces.

That is so sad. I would not expose her to any sights or sounds that remind her of the awful heartbreak she suffered in the past. It's best to let those memories fade away. She has suffered enough.

Awwww that is so sad make's you wonder what they think some time's. I hate people that are BYB. Poor Gracie , I,m glad she has you as her Momma.

Oh my that poor little girl. I do wonder what goes in in their minds!

Has she ever been aggressive in any other situation? Do you think she was aggressive because of the sounds of the puppies or because you were putting her down? Is she ok now?

I had two accidental breedings of Shep/Labs mating with Shep/Labs. I am not a breeder and both were heat cycle/spay timing related and occurred when I was not there to protect 'things' like that from happening. After the 7 pups from the first breeding were no longer with us, the mom 'adopted' my older son as her 'new baby' and after the 3 pups from the second breeding were no longer with us, the mom 'adopted' my younger son in exactly the same ways.

"Once a mother, always a mother" is completely true...at least it has been in my experience. lol

However, I have brought in older and younger babies to both cats and dogs, and I find that there is an 'age break' in that the puppies (or kittens) that females will 'adopt' are very young, whereas over about 3 months it was always my males (felines and canines) that took the older babies under their wing and taught them everything. I have seen this behavior in the animals since I was younger than my teens.

I also think it is a great idea, if you have a lactating mom to allow her to help out with motherless fosters. I don't know if I could do it, though...I'd have a mess of babies growing up adopted at my house if I tried 'cuz I'm great at fostering and suck like rocks through a straw at giving any of my fosters up.
