| Great Dental!!! Dexter went for a dental yesterday. Of course I was a mess waiting for the vet to call me to say he was done and awake. She called around 1215 and told me he was awake and done and doing well. Then she told me that to her shock and amazement..... he had NO extractions! He had no gum disease... just a few small pockets, she put him on antibiotics for a week. He is almost 7 years old. This is his first dental. She told me whatever I'm doing keep doing it, this is almost unheard of. Well I am doing nothing. I don't brush, I don't use anything special in their mouths at all. I just feed them dry dog food and very minimal people food! I feel so proud of my little man and his super pearly whites now... all 42 of of them still!

| Terrific!!!! I wonder how much genetics have to do with dental health. I know it plays a huge role in humans. Keep up the good work, Mom!

| You are so blessed. You apparently have a dog not predisposed to dental disease, it sounds like. Others, even with regular brushings & professional vet cleanings, have problems. And some, who have no dental care, get abscesses through the jaw &/or lose a lot of teeth - sometimes all of them due to dental caries & gum disease. You are one graced lady - and Dexter, too!!!

Thor's Human Donating Member | That IS great news! Well done, Dexter! Poor Thor is a little plaque monster. Literally if I skip a day or two of brushing, I can see more plaque forming. However, last wellness check, the vet congratulated me on Thor "only" having lost three teeth so far in his six years. She said, I "can tell that you brush" and that made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

My vet did say that their size plays a role in their teeth too... since both my boys are bigger, 7.5lbs and 13lbs, their teeth stand a better chance. (that is what the vet said, not me) She said all dogs no matter the size have 42 teeth. So if it's a tiny dog, there is VERY little space between the teeth, which can cause food to stay between teeth and create tooth decay faster than bigger dogs who have more room in their mouths. Even though it's proportional, I guess bigger dogs just fare better dental wise. Pockets are signs of gum disease, small abscesses in the gum line I guess. Since my vet saw a few small ones, but none that were jeopardizing the teeth themselves, she just gave him antibiotics for a week to make sure that any bacteria that was stirred up during the procedure does not create an infection.

| I'm so happy to hear Dexter's dental is over and done with and that he received an excellent report card. Those are some good genes he inherited!
