| What you tell a non yorkie owner about before they buy/adopt? Good or Bad I wanted to know what you would tell someone who has never owned one of these baby before they buy one? I am asking a lot of questions because part of my step sons summer is going to volunteering with shelters ESP. Yorkie Rescues. I know we are all different and so are adoptive parents. I am trying to get a lot of different prospective so he can talk to people without a one view perspective. This is why I have a ton of threads today. So if you don't mind helping me I would be appreciative

| I tell them they are buying the breeder first then the pup. They need to look for a reputable breeder that breeds to the standard, does health testing and provides a good health guarantee on their pups. I tell them to research about the breed and save money before they get pup for medical emergencies

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Adopting from a shelter is different from looking for a pup from a reputable breeder. Please review the stickey in the Library about how to find a Reputable Breeder. First I would say Yorkies do have some health concerns; and they do need prompt vet care. Hypoglycemia for small less than 3lb dogs - and growing puppies are a concern Yorkies do tend to need dental care. You can help with this by brushing their teeth, using additives in the water to help prevent plaque. Yorkies can be territorial, and truly are a big dog in a small package. Like all dogs they do need training. Please insure they become Good Canine Citizens. Yorkies can be "barking". The owner needs to work with this to control the barking. Other Health Concerns: Luxating Patella, many toy breeds including Yorkies can suffer from this. It is graded LP 1 to 4. With the lowest number being the least severe. Higher Grades often do require surgery, which is expensive about 2-$3K. Yorkies can be "fussy" eaters. But also this can indicate a problem in the gastro-intestinal tract. Please see your vet

| Truthfully, I would ask,"Have you owned a small dog before?" If the answer is no, I would highly recommend they dog-sit one before they buy one. |

| One thing that pops into my mind is : Yorkies like to be with their people. They are like having a toddler their entire life. Also, they have a long life expectancy compared to large breeds. I would outline possible health problems and why Yorkies need routine dental cleanings.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | The main thing I would tell them that yorkies can be expensive as far as health care. Even when doing your best to find a reputable breeder things crop up. They usually can't wait for vet care in an emergency situation and that can run anywhere from 150 for a basic visit or thousands if tests are needed. Also, they can be hard to housebreak, how would the new owner feel about accidents on their carpets. Also, grooming is required even if kept short. They can be barkers if not trained. Now for the good, they are adorable love bunnies.

| Most deffinately if going thru a breeder, lots of research first. Rescue is a good choice. Having one of these furbutts around, is for sure like having a toddler around. They can be time consuming, high maintenance, and they have their moments of being very demanding. But over all such a joy to have. |

| I think its important to know that they have very small bladders, and can be very hard to potty train. A larger dog at 12-15 lbs has so much more capacity... |

| I would recommend my two favorite books about Yorkies, and I would tell....I DO tell....anyone that I talk to about getting a puppy, to read these two books and then decide if this is where you want to go. "Yorkies for Dummies", and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide". |

| I would tell them there is no such thing as a teacuo ir micro yorkie, and if a dog weighing more than 4 lbs will make you love it less than yorkies aren't for you buy a hampster!!

I've not read them, but an old how I got my Yorkie story. I was training my big boy Magic, all the time with Ilona, and she had Yorkies, that came out to do obedience training with the big Blackies. They were so smart. So personable, I began to watch more and more her Yorkies. Then we were all together at a show on a gorgeous summer weekend, having a BBQ with all our friends. And one of her Yorkies decided to jump in my lap! SIGGHHHHH ... That was my hearts' turning point.

| All the above, and that they learn quickest using Positive Training Methods. They will not tolerate being hit in any way. They will love you forever!

| they are not always easy to train and are sometimes not a good choice for first time dog owners. If accidents are a problem, choose another breed. Some are very healthy, but a lot are not. Prepare for lots of vet trips and be ok with it.

We dog sat my nieces Yorkie Oliver for a few days when he was 1 and before we had Georgie. He had such bad anxiety that he threw up so much I had to take him to the Vet and they kept him hooked up to a fluid IV. Fortunately Georgie doesn't have the same anxiety issues as Olive but boy that did help us realize what having a Yorkie entails. Although as I said on another thread the unconditional love on both sides outweighs everything
