potty question Bella is 9 months old and thankfully always goes number 2 outside. On the downside, she still pees in the house. First, any advice/insight how to get both out there? I take her out all the time/limit her reign/praise like crazy...just still cant quite get it... Also, I'm wondering about how often she goes pee...literally has to every half hour when she has a lot of water and otherwise she goes pretty much every hour...I dont think it's a bladder infection since she holds it for a few hours at a time in her crate and she completely sleeps through the night...I feel like I may be taking her out too much and it's just a habit of going so much, but when I dont take her out that often she keeps peeing in the house

| That sounds a bit frequent to me... best have your vet check her out... there's no sense and a big waste of time trying to train if a medical issue is involved.

Have her checked. She either has an infection, some other bladder problem, or has been trained by going out too often. I think that they are supposed to be able to hold it about an hour for every pound they weigh. The fact that she sleeps thru the night makes me think it is behavioral though. I can't remember if I slept thru when I had my own, human UTI...Anybody else remember? You can limit her water. Maggie usually drinks after exercise and at night, not much during the day. Just offer it to her every few hours. I'd treat it like a child that is a stubborn potty trainer. Friend is going thru it now. Kid knows she has to go, and CHOOSES to go in her pullup. Try taking her every 2 hours (or 15 mins after food, after nap, after exercise, after water). Use a key word...we say 'potty outside?" and she will come to the door if she has to go. You should bring out her favorite treat and as soon as she squats say "good potty" and as soon as she is done say it again and give her the treat. That is how we did it for the poop. Maggie learned the pee easy. As soon as we treated the poop outside it was like a lightbulb! Keep the treats near the door to grab as you go out with her. Make sure you are excited and happy! I'm no trainer. Maggie still only comes when she wants to, though she knows the word. Same with stay. She will stay, but seeing the man and dog across the street are very tough to make her do it. Potty we did great with. Yay!

Thanks for the replies. It is especially confounding since she can be fine for hours at times and then will go every half hour in the house if she gulps water. I've mentioned it to the vet before, but nothing has really been done since she's so young and was sleeping through the night....I'm going to make sure everything gets checked thorougly and start slowly trying to increase time between bathroom breaks (I've already been giving her special treats, limiting water before bed)

My dd had a similar issue with her little girl biewer. Per our vet's advice and supervision, we did a several day trial and measured how much water she drank free choice. (Very difficult to do with two other dogs in the house) Took several days to get three good data points. Then he gave us a syringe and told us how many cc's of water to give her a day about 5 x day. If you only have the one dog this won't be too hard. Can't remember exactly how long this went on maybe a couple of months. Every time I said, let's go back to free choice, she started peeing everywhere again. Eventually, we were able to stop the measuring. Also, we had been training her outside only same as our other dogs. When we put a pee pad down in her day-pen, she taught herself to pee on it. She really prefers the pads but now will go inside or out. At seven months now, I would call her fairly well housetrained!! (She still likes to poop on the back door mat). Yeah! Please don't get too discouraged and keep trying. She will catch on.

Maybe the food you are feeding makes her really thirsty and she is drinking a lot of water and perhaps her wee bladder isn't strong enough to contain the volume, have you watched her water intake at all. I would just say try to encourage outdoor peeing and keep her out until she does. remove the pee pad and she if she holds it.
