				   | Sorry if I offend anyone but just to throw a spanner in the works. Did dogs not manage to breed for thousands of years before man can along and interfered. I think most of the issues dogs now have are due to man made problems trying to make the "perfect" dog in their eyes. I can understand someone who has a much loved pet wanting to breed that pet to have a little bit of them when they pass away. Before you all blow me out of the water , this is only one persons opinion to which I am entitled.

Personally, I would rather see people clone a much loved pet so they have a single dog for themselves, than generate a litter of puppies.

				   | I work in rescue and volunteer at my local kill shelter. I get to see the mixed and purebred dogs that people drop off because they are no longer cute, can't afford them, don't have time for them... When I see all those poor dogs at the shelter, it saddens and frustrates me. I know that most of those dogs were loved at one time... But they are no longer wanted. I know that 3-4 million animals are euthanized annually, and I do not want to contribute to the overpopulation of dogs or cats in this country. I just hope you think about this problem and save a life rather than contributing to this problem. Shelter dogs and cats are great and deserve families. Why bother bringing more animals into this world when you can go to your local shelter and save one from death?

Sure dogs did and actually still do in the wild. Certain countries are known for the packs of wild dogs. But I look at it like in the "olden" days when woman gave birth - no medicine around, there was a very high incidence of both infant mortality and mother fatality. I doubt it is much different in the doggy world. So yes man came along and interfered, and unfortunately we don't have firm stats on what the mortality rate, litter size and health was when man did not get involved in dog breeding. Actually man has been involved in dog breeding for about 5000 yrs or so. If there was a way to insure a litter size of only one, that might be one thing. But what is the owner going to do with the "extra" pups? What if they can't find homes for them? Where do those pups end up? And what about the pups which are supposedly free, but have very expensive medical conditions to treat? If the new owners won't or can't pay for it, is that "breeder" going to cough up the cost. After all they are responsible for bringing these pups into the world. These are some of the things I think about when I hear someone wanting to breed their family pet. Yorkie Rescues and New Homes needed forum has lots of examples. Breeders forum has lots of examples of ppl getting in way way over their head. Sick and Emergency Forum: you can treat yourself to the heart wrenching tales of sick dogs, many from "genetically" based illnesses. So that is what and why I base my opinion on; hey keep your family pet as a pet.

A believe a person coming on here to LEARN should be informed, not judged and run off the site, because at the end of the day, they will do what they want, no one can stop them. I would rather see them educated then leave here angry and still not knowing what to do.

				   | EXACTLY. Very well said. We do owe it to the breed to help anyone who is seriously interested in breeding yorkies.

				   | Not really because things are very different now and yorkies were not as small then as they are now.

				   | To those of you that think anybody can breed their dogs w/out testing & knowing the lines, you're WRONG! Don't cry when your pup gets or probably suffers w/ Hypoplasya of dens, Legg Calve Perthes, Luxating Patella, Liver Shunt, Tracheal Collapse, the list goes on & on...which are congenital! That pup's mom &/or dad should NOT HAVE BEEN BRED! grrrr

				   | agreed. But at this point the damage has been done. The best we can do is equip her with the knowledge she needs to help this go smoothly for the mother and babies and encourage her to spay afterwards |

				   | She could do an emergency spay but all this info could help others reading these posts not just the op.

				   | Should we encourage her to continue? Should we give our blind approval each and every time someone wants to breed their dog? Yes, I think we should help those that need it - but I also think how many other people will read this thread besides the OP. Perhaps they will decide never to breed after having read a thing or two. How many dogs have to die, alone and unwanted, every day before we stop encouraging careless breeding? It's one thing to help and another to lend our tacit approval to these practices. Help and educate - both.
