New yorkie owner in hell positive update - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I just wanted to post this update 3 months after I got my now almost 9 month old Yorkie. I am so greatful for this site and all the help and support I received when I first got my doggie. The first 2 weeks were absolute he!!, I actually thought I was going to have to send her back. She is my first dog, and I had no idea what to expect, even though I read every thing I could, and how hard it would be to have this little being in my life.

That being said, we got through everything, including the potty training - she is just about 100 percent pee pad trained - and she is the absolute love of my life. She brings me joy, laughter and companionship every day (even though I now have to get up at 7:30 - this is after I get up at 5:00 to let her pee - when I used to be able to get up at 9:00 and get up whenever on the weekends). I can't imagine my life without this beautiful, funny, lovely doggie smelling creature.

SO, for all of you out there who are getting a Yorkie and you think you might lose your mind because this puppy is so willfull and hard to deal with, HANG IN THERE. And believe it or not, once you get through it all, you will think that you should have actually enjoyed, yes enjoyed, all that puupy stuff that you stressed out about. Because our doggies are young one time, so I hope that some of you reading this and thinking they may have made the wrong decision in getting a yorkie puppy, will realize that you CAN get through all the crap and have an amazing, wonderful dog.

Glad you posted an update and so happy everything is going great

I know it can be hard but the difficult times are so minor compared to the love that Georgie has brought us. I love him behind words, talk to him like he can answer (I swear sometimes he does

) and can never imagine my life without him

I'm so glad you hung in there and it worked out so well. I have had many puppies and each time I think what did I do the first couple of days and then they steal your heart!

Yup, I talk to Beanie all the time. No really, I have conversations with her. She just looks at me with this look, like o.k., I don't really care what you are saying, just give me FOOD. LOL

that is so great! i too had yorkie puppy blues when i first got my angel. we were up every two hrs as he was sick and i had to syringe water and feed him and wash his bum after runny stools. it was hard, i cried everyday, but we are so very close now. the closest i've ever been to anyone! i love him beyond and would do anything for my baby. but i am glad the puppy stage is over though.... hmm, dont know how im going to handle it agian, but just one look at their faces and its so evident why we do it

So glad to hear your good report. My Gracie was not my first dog by far but she was my first terrier and she was a terror! Now I miss her puppy days. I guess now that I know how to deal with the issues it makes it seem like less of an ordeal

I don't have to get up early with her as she sleeps in the bed with me and has her own steps to get up and take herself to her potty. It is heavenly.She comes right back to bed and snuggles in with me. (she is not a morning person) She is still such a character and I love her dearly. I want another one but have been so scared by some of the issues people have faced that I have read here on YT. I'd love to rescue one but there are no rescues in our area and Yorkies are not popular in this area either.
I love to hear how a puppy that seemed like a terror at first becomes the love of someone's life!

or belly rubs LOL. I always ask Georgie "do you know how much Mommy loves you?" Obviously he doesn't answer but he doesn't have to I know he knows

Awwww! That's so great! It's not like that ONLY with a puppy, tho...it's kind of like that with any new furbaby. But, it is all sooooo worth it after you get in sync with each other...and the bond is set. I am so happy to hear you're getting on so well with your new baby and loving it so much. Nothing is as rewarding in exactly the same way as bonding with a completely different species. Your post should be an inspiration to all new fur parents...hang in there until the fun starts for real!

Congratulations on cutting your teeth as a first-time dog owner. It sounds like it was a rough start, and I'm glad you're doing well now.

I could sort of relate. My first experience with a yorkie was dog-sitting my friend's yorkie. I never owned a dog before. That yorkie had all sorts of behavioral and medical problems. I dog-sat that dog for weeks and long weekends at a time. But guess what? All the trouble was worth it. That yorkie was so dang loveable. I cried every time I returned the dog back to the owner.

Because of that yorkie, I fell in love with the breed. Now I have my own yorkie. She is a light in my life.

Incidentally, my yorkie doesn't have the problems my friend's yorkie had. But her yorkie will always have a special place in my heart. In a way, he was my first yorkie.

Ahahahha, I do the same thing. I ask her, do you know home much I love you. Of course she just looks at me. O.K. I have to ask this question. She smells like sleep when she, well gets sleepy. But I swear, she smells like freakin corn chips!! I have friends who have dogs and they say that their feet smell like corn chips. But my doggie just smells like corn chips when she is sleepy.

That's funny I always call Georgie frito feet HA!!!

So what the heck is it that makes dogs smell like corn chips?? How funny. It is only when she is sleepy, which she is now and smelling like corn chips. I cover her crate with a quilt (I know she is like a paraquet), and when she gets up, all I can smell is freakin fritos! ahahahahahhahha

Because our doggies are young one time, so I hope that some of you reading this and thinking they may have made the wrong decision in getting a yorkie puppy, will realize that you CAN get through all the crap and have an amazing, wonderful dog.
