My maiden name was not such a big deal...and half the world couldn't get that right, either! :p When I was in HR...back then it was called "Personnel"...but that was before we were disposable 'resources'...lol...we had an employee whose last name was "Papaconstantino"...looked pretty simple to say with a little practice. And, yes, I would practice saying these people's name aloud in my car on the way home! lol However, I always put the emphasis on the "-ti" part ("Papaconstan-TI-no"), saying the rest 'straight' through. Then, he called me one day and I found out he said it "Papacon-STANT-ino"...oops! More practice! lol He was a really nice guy! I also had a friend who claimed he was "a Russian Lithuanian Jew"...we'll skip his name for now...lol...and I still have a friend whose last name is Polish with very few vowels but she taught me how to say it properly. lol Then there's the "Theriot" last name...I had friends who called themselves "The-ROW" and "THER-row"...but when I referred to the next person I encountered named the same, I was quickly corrected...they say their name "TER-ee-oh"...lol...who knew! Whatever...it is definitely "The-riot" that name...lol |

Names and the correct was to pronounce is my worst nightmare. I have a language..speach problem. I try but I just struggle to say some words and names correctly. Add to that growing up in the mountain south with southern parents. Fast forward ..now living in a very multi cultural city and I really struggle. It is amazing how rude people can be. My name is unusually and I have NEVER put someone down for saying it wrong. My name is Shinja.. Japanese.. (I am not.. good ole southern scott/irish).. and only about 30% of the people I meet get it right. Even my sur names are often said wrong. I just don't get someone from another language/country being rude about how to say their name, correcting gently or saying it the correct way is understandable. |

"Shinja" just sounds so pretty...I love it! :) I do think the Japanese language sounds so lovely spoken. We are actually going to a Japanese Sushi & Steakhouse for Sushi (dinner) in a couple hours. There is an older lady there that we call "Grandma" who we just adore...we get/give hugs...they know us well there...lol Well, Grandma used to be a Geisha!!! She sits with us when it's not busy and tells us stories from her time as a Geisha. It is a real honor to be a Geisha! I'm Native American (3 Nations) and English, mostly, with some "Scotch, Irish, and Go-devil" according to may grandfather. :p My maiden name was Hawkins...it doesn't get much more English than that!...lol...and have/had both Italian and Irish last names also. I have no problem with someone not understanding 'how' to say a name...but if it's a name you are likely to use with any frequency, I think it is polite and thoughtful to try to get close on the pronunciation. Some people, due to their heritage...where they were raised, their native language, etc., have a difficult time wrapping their tongues around the sounds made by letters in foreign (to them) languages. I am no exception...lol! I did learn, though, if I don't think I can say it, I just ask..."How do you say your name?" Most people are not insulted and will just say it for you. I always took it to another level, inquiring where the name originates...partly because I am really curous that way. :D |
Wait a minute it's water and not wha-der? Forget it then, I'ma say H-2-0 as in A-chah, not Hha-A-ch...crazy English people think they know how to pronounce things in American! |

I have to agree with Mike and Priscilla. I always thought it was viewer with a B. Was the parti vs biewer question answered? I believe the partis are yorkies that have random white colorings on their coats. Biewers have specific marking placement. What the marking placement is.... I don't know. I also know someone has beevah feevah!!! Can't wait to see more pictures of little Curry Bee. :) |
I feel that it is pronounced Bee VAR.. accent on the Var |
Due to the popularity of this thread, I am changing the pronunciation of my name so there is NO audible sound. M is silent as in Mnemonic I is silent as in receIve K is silent as in Knob E is silent as in solacE If you ever run into me, shout nothing if you want to be correct. |

I prefer the grade school application of this, where we use our name's letter to create words that best describe us. M as in Mnemonic I as in receIve K as in Knob E as in solacE So M refers to knowing the month's lengths by counting on your knuckles And I well you taking it n the banning thread, K well I'll go with the English version of the word rather than our the literal which would consider you a useful object on a door-but really dumb works better E is what your wife gets while you are Yorkitalking! :) |
