Well, I mostly agree. CKC can be good or bad - in the US, generally bad, but it can also mean Canadian Kennel Club. There is also UKC (United Kennel Club) that I consider a reputable registry, and have also shown dogs in a couple smaller registries such as FCI. HOWEVER they all require a certified pedigree to register the dog. There are dozens of junk registries such as ACA, APRI, CKC (Continental Kennel Club), etc. Some breeds such as cavaliers also have breed only registries that are reputable.

I also think it's a mistake if you do want to get a puppy from a breeder to say papers don't matter. Papers not only show the breeders cares about their lines and breeding stock, and are more likely to have done research on the lines and problems in them, but a reputable breeder will also have health screening they can show you on the parents, and will be available to mentor and support you when you have questions or problems. You may pay a bit more but to me, it's worth it knowing your puppy came from healthy, carefully screened parents and a breeder that is dedicated to preserving and improving the breed.

I agree that AKC is the most reputable of the registries available here in the US but a puppy miller and other breeders who are dishonest can switch litter registration information around for their advantage. When dealing with disreputable breeders registration papers can mean nothing. Most of the puppies sold in pet stores have registration papers. So many people believe that if their puppy is registered then everything is OK about the purchase when that is so far from the truth.

I have seen people here on YT asking the same question about their registered puppy. So sad.

And the sad thing is in this country, AKC papers do NOT mean the dog came from a good breeder. Some mills still have AKC dogs and register AKC, and many back yard breeders do. The best way is to educate yourself, ask about health testing, view how the dogs are kept and who the parents are if possible (some good breeders will use an outside stud to increase their gene pool, or may just choose not to keep a stud to avoid any chances of an accidental breeding, so seeing the dad may not always be possible). That generally means finding a good breeder and sitting on a waiting list. Very few good breeders readily have puppies available, especially with the small litter size of Yorkies. They often place puppies with owners they've already established a relationship with that are on their waiting list.

She's so cute! she looks all yorkie to me! they all have their own look! my yorkie is not as small as the rest of the yorkies. he is nine pounds and all his siblings are 3 to 5 pounds! lol! my yorkie doesnt have pointy ears either! he has floppy ears! but he is the cutest thing ever in my eyes! they come in different shapes and sizes!

I agree with this, AKC is just the first step in find a good breeder, it's not the only step. Glad you mentioned getting on a waiting list, I agree, many breeders don't do a breeding until they have some pet homes lined up. We wait 9 months for a skin baby, we should be willing to wait a few months for a fur baby!

Exactly! Or sometimes even a year or two depending on the breeder. Heck, I've been waiting 5 years for the right York to come along since I only wanted a rescue and when I'd find them in shelters it was never the right time to add to my own family. Benji is a dream dog for me - and such a perfect gentleman!

I also want to say FCI is not small it is huge, it is the International Registry of the World.
It may be small here in Canada and the USA, but not internationally.

I have been on a waiting list for over one year, and will travel to Russia to secure my next BRT.

And I am on a waiting list for another yorkie :-) new news....

Very true! UKC is probably the 2nd biggest reputable registry, and then I do FCI and IABCA shows as well when I was actively showing. But that said every reputable breeder I know of that shows an AKC registrable breed in the other registries also does AKC.
