Since Lilo is training to be a therapy dog we spend a lot of time trying to interact with children. Frankly she has no problem with it. If anything she loves jumping in their laps to be petted.

But in that situation you were exactly right. When i see a child running towards Lilo i pick her up and hold her, positioning by body as blocker so the child cannot reach up and grab her in anyway. I dont want Lilo to be afraid of children or dislike being around them so usually i spend a little time educating the child. If possible i ask them to sit criss cross on the floor and i sit with them and let them pet Lilo. if they do well with this i allow Lilo to jump in their lap after asking permission from the parent. Lilo usually just sits there. LOL we do the 2 finger rule first. you pet using only 2 fingers just on her back. Lilo Loves it and Loves the kids energy and excitment. it usually becomes a good experience for all involved but we have had our share of out of hand children where they dont even get to touch her.

I also always tell kids mine will BITE! I first scoop them up, hold them close and high where the kid cant really see the dogs face, because if they did, they would see the dog smiling and trying to kiss them! I tell adults that want to pet and hold them, the same thing!

I'm going to say that our experiences have been positive so far. Lucy thinks that EVERYONE should want to meet and greet her and enjoys being petted even by the little ones. Most of the parents are very careful to ask if my dogs can be petted (never know what to say; they are friendly but you never know!). I usually say yes and allow a few gentle pats. Then I thank the children for being such 'good petters' and we quickly move on.

However, sometimes at the end of a long walk when I know she is tired, I will just pick her up and say that she's really tired right now I wouldn't want her to nip at anyone. That usually does the trick.

Argh! How irresponsible of this child's parents. I've gone out of my way to teach my children doggie ettiquite. My older ones from the time they were preschoolers always followed the rules 1. Never run up to a dog. 2. Politely approach a dog's owner, and always ASK before touching. 3. Don't get upset if owner says 'no' (I always stressed that some dogs didn't like kids, and if an owner says no it's for safety, both the pups and theirs) 4. Approach with slow gentle hands and let dog smell fingers before touching or petting, if the owner says yes.

Proud to say my older kids follow these rules to this day, and I'm teaching my younger two now. Although they are too little, I don't allow them to approach other people's pets at all yet. Thank goodness that little girl didn't accidently hurt Millie

I was just telling someone about how kids come up and want to hold and pet Georgie. I just tell them he is little and nervous and I offer them to pet our Boxer (which most are scared of). I completely understand how you feel!

I pick him up as soon as I see the kids heading our way!

That is similar to what I tell my 4 year old. I always make him sit in the floor and let her come to him. Since Millie stays in the kitchen with baby gates blocking the doors it works well because my little boy cannot get to her without someone letting him him. I thought he would be so excited when i brought her home and he was for about a day. LOL. Now he really doesn't pay her that much attention, which I guess in a way is a good thing.

My 4 year tries to pet Georgie on occasion but there is no brotherly love coming from Georgie LOL. I can totally relate!

Mags isn't very fond of kids, she's part yorkie and part chihuahua though so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've had kids here n our own home who approached her and wanted to play with her, so I simply tell them to leave her alone, she doesn't like kids and will bite them. They leave her alone. For some reason, the only kid she does like is my nephew, he's 7 years old, she'll climb up in his lap and just love him to the moon and back. Jazzie on the other hand, (she's all yorkie) loves all kids. She does get afraid when they rush at her, so I tell them she's afraid of fast movements and they have to move slow around her. They set down on the floor and it's nothing but kisses and giggles.

Ill let kids pet not pick up. Kids make Jewels nervous even though I have a daughter whose 11 and shes grown up with her

Kids are one thing but imagine an adult doing that! Happened to me at a department store. I had Romeo in my arms and turned to look at a bag. Some lady decided she was just going to reach out and pet him "because he's so cute". I was so furious I told her never, ever, ever do that again and she is fortunate he did not bite her. Romeo has never bitten anyone but he is protective of me (especially since he was in my arms).
